BANGKOK: -- The city bus monopoly managed by the financially- ridden Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) will soon end after the cabinet has endorsed the proposal of the Transport Ministry's plan to reform Bangkok’s entire bus network.

Under the new plan the Department of Land Transport will take full charge of the city bus operation while the BMTA which has monopolised the city bus operation for several decades but granted concession to private bus operators on a concession basis under the so-called pool bus service will see itself reduced to becoming only one of the major bus operators.

The director-general of the Land Transport Department Mr Sanit Phromwong said the end of the bus service  monopoly came as cabinet resolved to revoke the previous cabinet’s approval in giving exclusive right to BMTA to manage all bus services within the capital.

He said under the new plan the Land Transport Department will be in charge of handling all matters involved with bus services effectively reducing the BMTA role to being only one of the major operators of bus services.

All operators will be required to register with the Land Transport Department so that the entire service can be managed more effectively and profitably.

Let's hope the new companies are just as efficient and as courteous as the previous one.

I'd hate to see new drivers stopping when a passenger rings the bell, stopping at a stop, coming to a complete standstill while passengers are alighting and boarding, changing lanes with due care and consideration, driving like a professional, polite and efficient conductresses, sober well-dressed drivers, brand new eco-friendly vehicles with wheelchair access, neon destination boards and please keep the highly informative bus routes and timetable website.

So, come on. Don't let standards slip!
