Meechai

‘Court ruling doesn’t open path for non-elected premier to rule for 8 years’

BANGKOK: -- CHIEF CONSTITUTION drafter Meechai Ruchupan said yesterday that he did not think a Constitutional Court ruling on Wednesday would pave the way for a non-MP prime minister to be in power for at least eight years.

Meechai said that overall, the ruling would not bring about substantial changes, although he added that he was not in a position to criticise the court's judgement. Only the participation of the Senate in choosing a prime minister and the time frame for such an extraordinary process could be adopted, he said.

I suggest that Meechai is indeed correct in his thinking - because it is he, and the other CDC members who have already made it possible. See my post to another TV article http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/945779-unelected-thai-pm-could-rule-for-8-years’/#comment-11195537!

Yes I believe you sir. But this how it will go down. There will be 750 people to vote for the new PM of which 250 will be senators. Of the 500 elected MP the Dems should take +-30% and PTP should take +- 40%. The rest will be smaller parties. The senators and the Dems will thus have a combined total of 400 votes which will give them an out right majority to appoint the new PM. Any move to change the constitution will be voted down. Any request to have a referendum to change the constitution will be voted down. Any reforms that don't suit the army/ultra nationalists/traditional elites will be voted down. So the country will end up in a political dead end, unfortunately these types of dead ends normally leads to dead people.

Well said. An accurate  and concise precis of how it is planned. They may get away with it for the first election cycle -although expect the level of repression to ramp up, but if they try and pull it off for a second time then I rather suspect there will be trouble.

Under the MMA system (which has never been used by any other country nor tested as to impact on party size), it's more likely that the number of House seats gained by the Democrats and PTP will be lower proportionally, ie., Democrats 20% and PTP 30% with 10 or more medium-size parties accumulating a total of 50%. The NCPO intent was to force a coalition government either led by a PM having a weak powerbase or a PM selected by backroom deals with the smaller parties.

The effect will be the same. There will be a weak government that can be toppled at will.

There all crooks and the CDC employed via a  army faction. Wanted to rule the world. All the rest is to late. The only hope these people have if the next PM stands his own ground and stands up to threat internally. Expose all of them.
