CDC speeds up drafting of election and political party laws

Thammarat Thadaphrom

BANGKOK, 1 October 2016 (NNT) – The Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC) is accelerating the drafting of organic acts pertaining to general elections and political parties.

Meechai Ruchuphan, the chairperson of the CDC, declined to comment on claims that the Constitutional Court’s verdict on the draft charter will allow a non-constituency member of parliament to be appointed prime minister easier.

Despite the Constitutional Court’s interpretation of the draft, the chairperson said the origin of a prime minister will not be changed.

Meechai believes that members of parliament will not exploit the opportunity presented after the court’s ruling to extend the prime minister’s term in office from 5 to 8 years.

He also confirmed that the drafting team will finish revising the charter within 15 days before forwarding the revised draft to the prime minister who will then seek His Majesty’s endorsement. The draft constitution is expected to be enforced within November this year.

As for the organic acts, he said the CDC is now focused on writing draft acts concerning the general election and political parties, adding that these two laws must be completed first so as to allow all sectors to have enough time to prepare themselves.

So organic laws will not be written to match Constitutional Court interpretations.

Certainly shows where the Rule of Law resides.
