I endorse this protest

So, in your view, a squatter, illegally living on a piece of land or in a building, has a right to ask the government or developer to give them a place to live in.

For free or rent-free, I presume?

no I didn't say that

In the case of the Phuket Sea Gypsies, a fairly valid claim.

“This evidence [DNA] supports the villagers’ claims that they have lived here for more than 100 years,” [DSI Director] Gen Chatchawal said" http://www.phuketgazette.net/phuket-news/DNA-tests-confirm-Phuket-sea-gypsy-village/31072#ad-image-0

But now a company has decided with Prayut's cooperation to simply eject those residents for commercialization.

Every case should be scrutinized as to all the relevant facts in compliance with the law.

wow I actually agree with you

Wow, that was quite a protest. Why isn't it reported in the paper that we cannot name.

Save us from Americans and their rights rants. Assuming we are not discussing squatters, who have very little if any right to land possession, there is also the concept of eminent domain. You may have to look that up.

BTW my daughter and family had a very nice acreage block where they built a 4 bedroom house, pool and extensive shed area. Resumed for a 4 lane highway.

Do you mean Adverse Possession? Which would be more relative to the plight of some Thai's. I would think that most protestors would be termed squatters. If you do a little research on this issue, some prime land is held by these people, that some wealthy people would like to acquire. And yes it was a protest.

Is this continuing today?

That doesn't mean capitalism is fair.

There is no fairness in any world system due to greed and corruption in the hearts of men, whether under capitalism, communist or socialism.

And capitalism is now failing as shown by QEs and governments trying to control the use of cash.

Any system of governance will fail if there is no respect for equal justice, due process of law and judicial procedure.

PS: capitalism is an economic system and not a governance system. You probably meant "democracy." And you can add fascism, oligarchy and monarchy to your list.

I guess you missed the point of the article:

"Hundreds protest in Bangkok urging junta to respect land rights"

Maybe they are protesting because the law is not being followed?

How is that possible? The coup brought in "good people" that would address all the wrongs of the nation. Is it possible they are not so "good" after all?

And you didn't bother to read the post that I replied to.

Have you considered that what some consider their "rights" may have nothing to do with the law?

I thought any groups of people directive was still in effect?

I went to Phechabun in the mid-eighties and burst out laughing on the tour bus...

That was the first time that I saw hills without a single tree...

I wonder, how could that happen by any works of nature?

And the children of the cause...are clamouring for land rights?

The wrong use of land reflects negative on the lack of education by government but not on the land rights of the people that worked that land for generations.

Read up on deforestation of Thailand, esp the big Brown Patch on satellite photos.

And now they are lamenting on lack of water and loss of top planting soil...

It's not a lack of knowledge, but a lack of social responsibility. Present garbage disposal is a case in point.

And you believe small scale farmers have done this on their own ? Read about what is happening in Nan, about the way CP operate and follow that up with a study on the Chinese banana farms. Most deforestation is done by multi nationals not by small scale farmers. The MO of these corporations are to set fire to virgin forest and then afterwards get permission to lease this land from the government at next to nothing. Most small scale farmers don't even own their land. You can try and make a living of 5 rai of land if you want to and see how far you go, because that is the average size of small farms in this country. In the past several governments was overthrown which wanted to instituted land reforms (including the last legitimate one). If I remember correctly the top 10% landowners owns 80% of the land in Thailand. So when you see the brown patch you see the result of corporate greed, a lack of education and corrupt government officials that don't enforce the law.

Geez, you don't have to blame any one group, blame overpopulation first and greedy rich people second. The world has so so many people and they all want more and more better lives and do anything to get that. That's what it really is. You won't work the land if the profit or need isn't there. It's demand by the world. You can blame the world's people and systems for the waste and loss of production in some places due to market realities but ultimately in the end Demand by the ever growing population is driving the poor farmer and the massive corporations to expand and add more and more land under their production. That's it for me. People! Less people and less greed by those that have good lives already will make the world a better place. Less babies means less squatters to be and less fields to grow. Less is the answer.

It's the interweb.  20 years ago, they didn't even know what they didn't have.  Now, they all want it.  Whatever "it" is.  Curse you, Google!
