foreign parent of Thai citizen

Featured Replies

Im an American citizen.. my 25year old son lives in and is Thai citizen. Can he get long term visa for me.. Ive noticed that a foreigner with work permit can get visa for parents so it would stand to reason a Thai citizen can do the same. TQ

If you are the legal parent of a Thai citizen (either married to the mother under Thai law at the time of the birth, or legalized as the father in Thailand) then you can, with financial proof, easily get visas and extensions of stay based on this. If your relationship with your son is not formally recognized under Thai law,, but you are named as the father on the birth certificate,  you may still be able to get multiple entry Non Imm O visas. That will depend on local consulate rules.

With luck, @ubonjoe will be by to give you definitive advice. Trust what he says.

You can apply for an extension based upon being the parent of a Thai.
You need 400k baht in a Thai bank or proof of 40k baht income.
There is a provision in the police order for you to get it if 50 or over to be supported by your child but there has been no report of somebody doing it.

You will need to enter the country with a Single Entry Non Immigrant 'O' visa issued on the basis of being the parent of a Thai. That visa will give you permission to stay for 90 days. Within the last 30 (maybe 45) days you can apply for a 1 year extension of stay as the parent of a Thai. There are two possible ways to apply as the legal parent:-

  1. Showing 400K minimum in the bank or a certified income of 40K pm.
  2. Being over 50 and applying to be under the maintenance of your son.
