24-Hour Border Run or Tourist Visa in Cambodia?

Featured Replies

Hi all. I wanted to get your advice on this upcoming entry / reentry issue...maybe I'm overthinking....

USA Passport

Over the past 8 years I've entered Thailand about 8 times (7 visa-exempt, 1 two-month tourist visa). No overstays, many stays under a week.

This year 2016:

in February: 1 visa-exempt overland stamp.... in Thailand just 24 hours (overland in transit from Cambo to Laos)

in June: 1 visa-exempt stamp for 30 days (flew in and out of BKK)

in July: After 2 weeks out of Thailand and in Penang, re-entered overland with 2-month Tourist Visa, extended for one month in BKK to 90 days.

...this visa is finished next week.

So, I want to go to Cambodia and do a border run from Surin next week Oct 12; come back to TH and get 30 days visa exempt stamp (3rd of the year).

After these next 30 days, go back to Cambodia Nov 12 (this time stay out for a few weeks) and get the two-month Thai tourist visa in Phnom Penh, then return to TH and stay in TH til February 2017 with tourist visa.

Does this sound like too many visa exempts or crossings? My schedule is tight, so I don't want to risk being turned down either next week or in November. Should I just stay in Cambo a few weeks and get the Tourist Visa this next time out? Thanks in advance for any advice.

If your plans were all using air travel into Bangkok, I would confidently predict you would have no problem. Land borders with Cambodia can be less predictable. I would still expect you would be OK, but it would be as well to have a backup plan just in case.

You should not have a problem at the Chong Chom crossing in Surin. Only the southern crossings to Cambodia can be a problem.
