New Travel Rules Require Birth Certificates for Thai Children

Thailand has introduced new departure requirements for Thai children under 18 travelling overseas, with parents and accompanying adults now required to provide additional documentation during immigration checks. The new rules were announced by the departure immigration division at Suvarnabhumi Airport and are intended to strengthen safeguards against children being taken out of the country without the consent of their parents or legal guardians. Previously, Thai children could generally leave the country with a valid passport, but immigration officers can now request a birth certificate — either the original, a copy or an electronic image — together with a consent letter issued by a government agency from the child's father and/or mother. The changes mean families travelling internationally need to prepare the additional documents before reaching the airport to avoid delays. Separately, the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand is introducing new baggage inspection rules from October 16, allowing security officers to open checked luggage without the passenger present when X-rays identify potentially dangerous items. CAAT has also tightened rules on power banks, which must be carried in cabin baggage and cannot be used or charged during flights.
