BANGKOK: -- Police arrested a gunsmith and seized two illegal homemade handguns, ammunition and several gun-making tools in a house raid in Bang Khen district on Thursday.

Metropolitan police commissioner Pol Lt-Gen Sanit Mahathavorn said that the suspect, 31-year old Tossaphol Fungsit, offered to sell guns on the internet at prices ranging from 7,000 baht to 15,000 baht apiece.

He said police had been trying to track him down and, finally, managed to locate his whereabout which is a townhouse in Sena Villa 3 housing estate in Bang Khen district. A raid was launched Thursday morning and the suspect was apprehended.

Tossaphol who claimed that he learned how to assembly gun from the internet told police that he made his guns from BB guns that he bought from the market, the have their barrels and trigger mechanism replaced with real ones.

Being a gunsmith is a skilled & honourable profession.  Being an illegal gun maker is a criminal activity.  I believe he was the second and not the first.

He said he sold 40 of them and sent them by post. Post office don't x-ray the parcels?  May be thousand of parcels everyday makes it an impossible task.

Is he Thai national, his name doesn't sound Thai to  me.

Tossaphol or Tosser for short!

Not sure I would want to shoot a 357 Magnum with a BB Gun Barrel. Or at least more than once. Some good strong pipe would do better I think and maybe cheaper to.

Read the last paragraph "from BB guns that he bought from the market, the have their barrels and trigger mechanism replaced with real ones."  even so, I wouldn't risk it.

I stand corrected but also confused now.

If he replaced the barrels and trigger mechanism with real ones, what did he need the BB Guns for?

I mean if you look at a Colt 45 Revolver, for instance, and then replace the chamber, barrel, and firing mechanism with real ones, what is left of the gun besides the wooden handle? Surely he wouldn't buy a BB Gun just for a wooden handle when just about anyone could make their own. Or shown how on the Internet.

Correct by Confused.

Such conversions are commonly done in many countries where real handguns are hard to own.  Low Pressure cartridges  are usually used as they do not take as much restraining, but can still kill at the other end.  But they can also blow up and take part of your hand or a whole finger off too, or even one or your eyes out.   But desperate people do take stupid risks.

You dont see any revolvers in the pic do you?

When using a BB gun replica frame & slide of say a 45 acp  it may be possible to modify &

fit an actual 1911 barrel etc into it along with the trigger mech/firing pin/extractor etc

I'm surprised at this story making the news. I thought that most Thai households have guns, or have easy access to one...
