About 80 people representing more than 200 families from Phnom Penh’s Por Senchey district, and Banteay Meanchey province’s Poipet City, joined two protests yesterday demanding suitable compensation for land and housing relocation resulting from the ongoing development of the northern line. About 40 people from Por Senchey district’s Samroang Krom and Kakab communes gathered in front of the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction claiming no officials had come as promised to look into the situation they faced over forced evictions and damage.

“They [the ministry] said they went and resolved for us but so far, we didn’t see anything. We do not want anything besides having legal rights to own the land for living properly and giving to our children,” said a representative of the families, who declined to give her name. She added that the group met with Minister of Land Management Chea Sophara, who requested they remain calm and continue to live as normal and the ministry will visit to investigate.

A ministry spokesperson confirmed that the case was being reviewed, but declined to comment further. In a separate protest in front of Poipet City Hall, 30 people demanded land and a housing resolution.
