Thailand aims to increase plastic export value to 1.1 trillion bt within 5 years

BANGKOK, 12 October 2016 (NNT) – The Ministry of Industry is planning to increase revenue from plastic exports to 1.1 trillion baht by the year 2021.

The Industry Ministry's Permanent Secretary Somchai Chanhiran said that Thailand is a major exporter of plastic to both the ASEAN and the global market, despite most of the products are exported in the form of plastic pellets which are not so expensive.

The Institute of Plastic is preparing to restructure the national manufacturing strategy to process plastic into products with higher value per unit, such as plastic packaging for food, bio-plastics and medical equipment made from plastic, he said.

The Industry Ministry aims to increase the revenue from plastic products to 1.1 trillion baht, from the current value of 650 billion baht, within five years time.

Well that is a strategy that swims straight into the current...

You could start with my neighbors yard, that would give you about 1 million baht!

it's amazing what we read in the media.. but more amazing what we don't.  the good part is that this is worth real money, sometimes, as well. example, last month Thailand had all time record exports of HS 87089510... automotive airbags... and the world's biggest airbag fabric plant is located in Bangkok, and has been since 2014.  the airbag business is well over 1 trillion baht... and more exciting than plastic.... but there is no official support for it... because it don't need any... so you don't "need" to read about it... so you don't.  and that's why this forum is better than either of our two lovely English tabloid choices by far.  the HS data is open to the public on the Thai Customs webpage. you won't find any titillations there, only numbers.

Great. More plastic garbage for the oceans.

It is one thing having an aim but it is another thing to achieve it. Thailand's hopes seem to be built on umpteen of these futuristic aims, 20 year plans, 10 year plans etc. all at a time when the economy is progressively going backwards. Armies and their generals are better known for battle plans rather than economic plans.

Is the baht is going to devalue that much?

My father spent his life in plastics development and manufacture.  When he started it was cutting edge, the dawn of a "New Age".  He became rather critical of its overuse, especially in areas where it was actually inferior to "traditional" materials.

My mother worked in the industry too, that's how they met.  In her later years she detested its use in food and drink utensils, regarding it as near, if not actual, poison.

I could not help but think that both of them, in their different ways, felt that they (along with other makers of that New Age) felt somewhat ambivalent about their part in the release of one of many (less than wholly benevolent) "genies" into the world.
