BANGKOK: -- Police commandos and local officers were out in force at Central Lat Prao yesterday.

Three different sections of officers were seen checking public waiting areas in front of the store in the Jatujak district of Bangkok, reports Daily News.

Officers were also seen touring the car parks and secluded areas checking on anything suspicious.

The security presence followed news of fears that a terror cell was to hit the city towards the end of this month.

Information about a credible threat to the city from car bombs came via Australian security services.

A leaked memo caused police to initially deny there was a problem before meeting and beefing up security at a number of places in the city.

Residents can expect continuing increases in security presence in the coming days and weeks, reports said.

BANGKOK: -- Raids Detain eight suspects after warning of car-bombs in Bangkok.

SECURITY authorities in Bangkok have stepped up surveillance in public areas while more than 100 soldiers and police raided several locations in the city yesterday after warnings of possible bomb attacks in the capital and nearby Samut Prakan province.

Security officials detained eight suspects during the raids, who were taken to Hua Mak Police Station for interrogation.

Pol Colonel Torsak Sukwimon, the Crime Suppression Division's head of special operations, led more than 80 commandos yesterday to boost security at CentralWorld, Siam Square, MBK, Central Plaza Lat Phrao and Esplanade Ratchada in Bangkok, which were ranked among the risky spots.

Just getting ready....jailing Jatuporn....financial pressure on the shins....etc.

Jatuporn put himself there to enhance his martyr credentials. YL already moved much of her dosh offshore. But I do agree it's a distraction, but from what?

A long rain's gonna fall, if you listen carefully you can hear the gentle fluttering of someone's chickens coming home to roost. They're not mine though so I can sit back with a G&T and watch the show.

Just who are these 8 "suspects" and why are they being interrogated,  last night it seems they were simply students, ok, muslims, but hey, no other reason.

Will put off my trip to BKK for a while...

Me too, and i won't visit any big mall for sure.

Also i bet i can still bring a "bomb" from 50 kg into any mall to prove that it's possible. Will they also start checking all passengers who bring in suitcases into the airport? Good luck with that.

I recall it was only yesterday that PM Prayuth was wanting the media to play this story low key so as not to alarm the public.

Now we have the security commandos crawling all over Central World, Siam Square, MBK, Central Plaza Lat Phrao as thick as ants and scaring the bejesus out of people. This in itself gives further food for media reporting as exampled by this story. Does the PM really know how this threat is to be handled or his he just palavering as usual?

Missed the news in Malaysia on their arrest of an IS suspect who is an undergraduate? One who tried to get into Syria through Turkey?

Simply students?

555 But you can arrest a random bun h of Muslims. That is what they have done. This makes it seem as if they are doing something and the situation is under control. But lets think about it, is it possible that only 8 people could plan and implement such attacks? I think the answer is no. The elephant in the room is however the fact that the war in the south are now spreading and that is on the juntas watch.

Agree, for an operation of this magnitude, you would need a number of safe houses, covert transportation means, supporting logistics, several bomb making facilities etc... anetwork of 100+ people I would think.

For those of you who say "I'm putting off my trip to Thailand", or "won't go to a big mall", the terrorists would be absolutely delighted as they have won. So you want to stay home and bury your head in the sand?

For myself, I understand the risk just as I understand the risk of crossing the road at a zebra crossing in Bangkok. I have a life to live and I'll be damned if any crazed terrorist is going to dictate to me what I do with it!

Who cares if the terrorists will be delighted if they don't come to Thailand? There are many more places to go and they don't have those threads.

It's not burying heads in the sand, it's called risk avoidance....Singapore doesn't have these threads, so does Malaysia or Australia to name a few.

Where are the (machine)guns of the commando's? Are they hanging on their backs? I don't see them.

commandos refers to their summer uniform which does not include underwear. there were to many shootings so the firearms have been kept at home safe under the bed or in the oven. (this is one of the suggested best places to hide a fire arm if you dont have a safe.

During previous bombwarnings (after bombs went off in BKK) there were soldiers in the skytrains with huge machineguns.

Guess this warning is not the same as the real warnings. Anyway, i won't go to any mall or airport and i prohibited all my familymembers to do so as well.

Actually, now an alert has been raised, the terrorist scum will likely pack up and plan for another city or country....perhaps Singapore or Australia, who knows? No country is immune from terrorist attacks. With this in mind, it is probably safer now to be out and about in Bangkok with all the extra security and awareness of a possible threat.

If it was known that there was a bomb at a certain venue, then risk avoidance comes into play and naturally one keeps away. However, if you are a risk avoider by nature, I think you are going to miss out on many of the good things in life. A risk avoider wouldn't fly or drive, wouldn't cross the street, would never go to the cinema or a restaurant, bar or night club. And, regarding the topic here, would never go to a shopping centre.

Risk minimisation, sure no problem. Take whatever precautions you feel are necessary. Stop living.....never.

As for "who cares if the terrorists will be delighted....", I care and so should you. Imagine a terrorist cell gathered around and laughing because they had disrupted thousands of peoples' lives? No siree, for me, the only good terrorist is a dead terrorist.

think assault weapons may scare the masses. i am going to nz for the coming high season. am a bit nervous about going through the airport with my kids. airports seem to have become favored places for terrorist attacks. oh year thats right, no terrorism in thailand. need to move the airport further from the south.

Students (adult... or quasi adult?) are becoming the mainstay of home grown terrorists, aren't they?

a little education can be a dangerous thing.

On the other hand it can take only one 'crazy' to do a lot of damage.

That's enough given the age, and positions and more so being Muslims, some of whom tend to be followers of fanatical Islam after having been radicalised and are into the killing of  others who are not of the same ilk.

Just look at what is happening around the world and the ages, sexes and positions of those involved.  I'd rather be safe than sorry and people should start thinking of the victims and their families and not be so precious about those being detained.

You ask why they are being interrogated and then go on to answer you own question without any knowledge of why.  Simply those detained are quite capable of being involved and it appears there is Information about a credible threat to the city from car bombs came via Australian security services.

The person that leaked the Memo has just compromised the security of Bangkok.

Well Done.

Wonder why they have to get this information from a Foreign country in the first place.

A draconian view.

round up all the Muslims and make them wear a sickle motive on their cloths... that should work

surely heightened security and extensive bag and car checks should act as a deterrent, to some degree.

and.... if I was a radical Muslim bomber, the first thing I would do would be to buy new jeans, shave my beard, and cover my head bashing callous with a smiley face band aid.... freeing me from islamophobic persecution and letting me get on with my mission to meet allah.
