Hello!

So here is a story about how stupid I can be.

Bought plane ticket in Canada a few months ago. Did all visa research then specifically, run for the border info.

Surprise did not look into it again.

Got here 2 days ago and found out about the change.

Now I am not sure what to do.

1. I only have a 1 month entry stamp

2. I wanted to stay for 5-6 months. Is all hope lost?

3. If hope is lost and I do have to leave how would I extend the 30 day to 3 months?

4. If I travel around for the remainder of the time, will I be allowed back into Thailand to get my return flight in 6 months time?

5. If I have to leave Thailand to apply for the 3 month tourist visa where would be the best place to go?

Thanks so much for any help you can give me. I feel really stupid and totally depressed. :o

1. No change - 30 day entry without visa.

2. A two entry tourist visa would have been the answer - not as likely to be available now (in this area) but you could give it a try. KL or Singapore are recommended. All hope is not lost.

3. You can exit/return for a total stay of 90 days just by crossing the nearest border with immigration facilities and returning after obtaining a stamp in the other country.

4. You will be allowed up to 90 days from our understanding at this time so yes - if you spend time outside of Thailand it will not count toward that max.

5. You should go to KL or Singapore before this 30 day entry expires and apply for a tourist visa. Even a single entry will provide you up to 90 days that from our understanding will not count against the 90 day limit of entry without visa regulation.

I think combined with a tourist visa and the free entry visa(s) you should be ok for 6months. However has lopburi has pointed out - trip to Singapore or KL will be in order plus 3 months worth of visa runs.

Oh my gosh you guys have made me so happy!

Sorry to ask another question but this is my first time travelling anywhere where visas are needed! Please let me know what you think of this plan

Chiang Mai 1 month

1 week in Cambodia

re enter Chiang Mai for 1 month

Trip to KL- Get the visa (fingers crossed!)

Indonesia for 1 month

back to Chiang Mai for the next 90 days and then home

If I can't get the visa, any suggestions for a nice 3 month stay until I return for my last month in Chiang Mai??

6 months in asia and all youll see is thailand what a tragedy...

if i were to want to stay in thailand for best of 6 mos at this juncture i would take another 30day stamp and then move on to penang for a single which will give you 60 plus 30 if lucky and want to pay ACK! b1900.

or you could get off the barstool and see cambodia, vietnam, myanmar, sumatra and malaysia - for starts

Lao is worth a look too and just an overnight train trip from BKK, also some nice spots in the Philippines. Fly up to Kunming in China. from Chiang Mai quite cheaply too.

Were it me, I'd try and obtain a visa in Cambodia or wherever in late Dec (you must exit Thailand on or before 26 Dec I assume). As you are obviously a genuine tourist you should not have any trouble and it will put your mind at rest. After that is used you can get another 90 days of visa exempt entries.

In January there will be a large number of habitual 30 day border runners visiting SE Asian consulates to pick up visas. It may be by the time you get to KL in February the consular staff may be so heartily sick of 'em that even genuine tourists may be given a hard time. Who knows?
