Non-Imm. O Type. With Thai Spouse from UK Requirements

Featured Replies

My wife and I are going to Thailand for 89 days from the UK.

I intend to apply for a Single Entry Non-Immigrant 'O' Type Visa.

I've just checked both Hull & London websites and the requirement info varies slightly.

Ubonjoe previously told me that the financial requirement they have listed is a mistake.

Is this info on the Hull & London websites correct? They both mention proof of funds: is this still a mistake?

Before I apply, I'd be grateful if somebody could please confirm / list exactly what I do need to submit. Many thanks.

Hull website- Category "O"

1) Married to a Thai national. Evidence required:

a) Copy of Original Thai Marriage Certificate (front and back).

B) Copy of spouse’s Thai ID Card (front and back)

c) Copy of page of spouse’s Thai Passport showing name and picture.

d) Copy of latest 3 months Bank Statements (Thai and/or UK bank showing regular income. Bank Statements must include name and address of visa applicant and address on Bank Statements must be same as on Visa Application Form.

Only a single entry visa may be granted in these circumstances. Applicant will need to arrange Extension of Stay as necessary in Thailand.

London website  Non-Immigrant Type O

  • Birth Certificate (applicant's child)
  • Certificate of Marriage or its equivalents (if married to Thai national)
  • a copy of marriage certificate,a copy of Thai passport/a copy of Thai ID of spouse and (3 months bank statement showing monthly income of more than £1,400 anuually.)
  • An official recommendation letter from organization perform voluntary job in Thailand (for volunteer job)
  • Pension statement if the applicant is a pension earner.

I've always found the information from the embassy and consulates inconsistent. I once tried emailing the embassy with three questions of which they replied to one. I now just come straight here. Hopefully someone will be able to help.

I'm about to apply for a visa myself as a UK citizen of 62 married to a Thai. I don't want to hijack your post but I have a couple of questions regarding proof of income which maybe can be answered as well.

I'm self employed and work a few months a year. I also receive rent from a flat I own. The income from self employment over the year I think covers the £1400 a month although I will check. The rental will cover any shortfall anyway. The self employment income is regular whilst I'm working although I did have 2 weeks without income whilst in hospital and recovering at the end of August. If I send 3 months statements they must know that I won't be earning whilst I'm in Thailand so do I need to send more proof? Also I don't get printed statements so can I print ones from the internet? They have my name on the but no address which I'm sure I saw was required.

Anyway let's hope we can get the answers and visas we need.

The embassy does not ask for financial proof when you apply for a non-o visa (single or multiple entry) based upon marriage to a Thai.

Just a simple calculation of the amount (1400) shown on the embassy website shows the info is an error since it comes out to the income requirement for retirement not 40k baht which at current rates is about 900 pounds.

Hull has been reported as wanting it to apply for a multiple entry visa (no longer available from them). The other consulates will not ask for financial proof.

Thanks Ubonjoe.

About 2 or 3 years ago I phoned the consulate in Hull to check on some other requirement and they listed everything. This included financial proof which I could meet but may have taken some time which i didn't have. Based on recommendations from here I tried Birmingham (no longer available I believe) and they're never heard of it.

Many thanks again Ubonjoe.

Over the years, when it comes to visa application time, I've found inconsistencies with the information between Hull, London & Liverpool.

It would be helpful if the London Embassy Visa Section would clearly and correctly set out the requirements, and these same rules used by all Thai Consulates!

Good luck with your application Kimamey.

I sent off a postal application for this non-imm 'O' visa (have Thai wife) on Monday 31 October.

I previously used to use the Hull consulate for years and fund them very helpful, efficient and their website full of useful info.

However, I found the London Embassy website full of contradictions. It says "Anyone in British Isles (except if you come from certain other countries) can apply or a visa by post. So I did.

In another place it says the embassy only accept payment in cash or postal order. Then a bit further down it says 'cash only'.

My question is: Will I get my visa? I've just noted that for non-immigrant single visas it says £50 N/A by post! And now searching I've found a page saying that non-immigrant visas can only be got 'In Person'!

I promise you I can read and I'm used to form filling and navigating difficult websites, but somehow I managed to initially only find info which guided me to apply by post and pay via Postal Order.

I've supplied all the info they requested (even including a copy of the out & return tickets). Do you think that they will issue a visa?

I live a long way from London!

You have to be careful navigating the London embassy website. If you go to this page and select applying by post you will get the correct info. http://www.thaiembassyuk.org.uk/?q=node/4

In person is on a different page where it says cash only.

The only visa for a UK citizen or resident that has to be applied for in person is a OA long stay visa for retirement. And the 3 year non-b visa.

Those from certain countries can only apply for a visa in person.

Thank for your fast reply Joe (as usual!)

So do you think I'll get my visa having sent it by post?

It seems from what you say above that you think I will?

But when I visit the page you suggest it says:

Visa Type

Fee (£)

1 .Transit (3 months validity/Single Entry)

  20

2. Tourist (3 months validity/Up to 60 days/Single)

3. Tourist (6 months validity/Up to 60 days/Multiple Entries)

  25

 125

4. Non-Immigrant (3 months validity/Single Entry/up to 90 days)

5. Non-Immigrant (1 year validity/ Multiple Entries)

7. Non-Immigrant O-A (3 months validity/ Single Entry/Up to 1 year)

8. Non-Immigrant O-A (1 year validity/ Multiple Entries/Up to 1 year)

  50

 125

  50 N/A BY POST

 125 N/A BY POST

9. Non-Immigrant (3 year validity/ Multiple Entries)(Business only)

 250 N/A BY POST

You wrote you are applying for a multiple entry non-o visa  (5) which does not have the N/A by post next to it. Only 7, 8 and 9 have that beside it.

Thanks Joe & Steve, and yes I now see my mistake.

If for item 4) they has put '4. Non-Immigrant O (3 months validity/Single Entry/up to 90 days)'  Instead of just 'Non-Immigrant (3 months....' I would have got it first read. I was looking for 'Non-Immigrant O'. I've had many of these over 20 years. When I saw O-A I thought it was O and A type. I have now found there is no 'A' type visa! (I knew there was a B and ED. I didn't know there was an O-A)

However the website does have contradictions and different variations of the same info, which lead to my confused and increasing 'panicky' state of mind. I was getting more &  more convinced I'd made a mistake and wouldn't get my visa unless I went in person. Thank goodness for this forum! As I said initially, I used to obtain my visas from Hull and always found their website very good. The London Embassy certainly does need to clarify the info.
