BANGKOK: -- The NBTC has issued a directive requesting internet providers suppress content deemed damaging to the Thai monarchy.

Thakorn Tanthasit, secretary of the national Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission said that illegal content from "some people" and "some groups" was spreading falsehoods and creating misunderstanding in the country.

He said that such content can be prosecuted according to the law. He was referring to comments that would be illegal under the country's strict lese majeste laws, reports Daily News.

He said that some content on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Line fell into this category.

Thakorn asked for the "urgent" cooperation of internet providers in suppressing damaging content.

He mentioned the name of "Aum Neko" a social activist who has commented on Facebook in the past as an example of such content.
