SUKHOTHAI: -- The governor of Sukhothai has announced that the province's Loy Krathong candle and light show scheduled for November 10 - 14th has been cancelled.

The province is one of the most famous in the country for celebrating the traditional Thai event of Loy Krathong.

He said that a committee has been set up to examine the financial consequences and otherwise of the event being cancelled, reports tnamcot.

The cancellation follows the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej last Thursday.

But the governor is still encouraging people to celebrate Loy Krathong according to tradition.

With this in mind charges to visit the Sukhothai historical park during 10 - 14 November between 6pm and midnight have been scrapped for both tourists and locals so they can enjoy the occasion.

Loy Krathong, though popularized during the time of King Chulalongkorn or Rama V, has its roots in traditions dating back to the time of the 12th century Sukhothai kings.

In the modern ceremonies people light candles on decorative boats made of banana leaves and flowers. These are placed in water in symbolic gestures of floating away ones troubles.

Respectful, but knee-jerk cancelation? now being reconsidered once realizing how many tourists will cancel their visit? Can't backpedal now!

This is the sort of thing I would like to see posted in the proposed  new sub forum within the Thailand Local Forums.

This is the sort of thing I would like to remain posted right here. If it is also in a sub forum fine but it should also be in the main news.

The junta set the standard by rushing into decisions about television, dress codes etc and then started changing their minds.
