Strong but shallow earthquake rocks western Japan

A huge earthquake has shaken western Japan.

 

There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage following the 6.6 magnitude tremor.

 

However, 40,000 households were left without power.

What time did the earthquake strike?

 

It happened at two o’clock in the afternoon. A series of aftershocks followed.

 

The epicentre was in Tottori prefecture at a depth of ten kilometres.

“There is an increased risk of collapsing buildings and landslides in the area near the epicentre. Please do not enter any unstable buildings and be careful in the event of further quakes and rain.”

No risk to nuclear plants

Experts say there was no risk to nearby power plants.

 

An earthquake in northeastern Japan in March 2011 triggered the world’s worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl.

If I lived in one of those houses in the picture I would call it major damage. Unless the picture is from another time or another place.

I take my hat off to the Japanese earthquakes, torrential rains, typhoons they still seem to survive and flourish and teach us how to make a better mouse trap.
