Headless baby case - parents will meet with hospital on Monday

Thank you, I was waiting for a qualified doctor or midwife's opinion on this before passing comment.
To all the Thai-bashing policemen trying to make out that this was somehow normal, I say shame on you.

Read my comment above, plus the comment of the TV poster who was actually born this way.

Now shame on you!!!

My daughter was breech and the doctor didn't even attempt to extract her.  She was rotated in the womb and my wife gave birth normally.  More qualified doctor in a civilised country tho.

GP or specialist?

2-month pre-term baby or not?

Walked in at 8cm dilation or earlier?

And was your daughters case similar to this specific case or you assume all child births are exactly the same?

This procedure to deliver baby is a standard procedure in Thailand. And the money compensation is also a standard procedure in Thailand. No one need psychological counselling when the baby comes headless..

Sounds like headless babies are not all that uncommon if standard procedures are such.  I suppose if that is standard procedure, counseling would be less needed, especially of the standard procedure money compensation is adequate, every body is happy.

Louisiana? Well, that explains it - I am sorry....

the hospital should have strict medical bylaws and procedures when cases of Mal practice re: doctor suspended with pay, notifying the state medical review board, their own medical legal council and risk management and QA committees and joint chiefs of staff and hospital executive committee...

who in the hell knows what happens in thailand? My guess is it  is ripe with flaws, biases, poor documentation/follow-up and inconsistencies....

Maybe thats because you are not a doctor.

A 2-month pre-term baby has often not "turned" yet meaning the butt comes out first. If the mum does not cooperate enough by pushing hard enough, which is likely due to her age and the pain she is experiencing, the doctor has to pull the head out with considerable force. They normally do that by putting one finger in the unborn baby's mouth and the other fingers around the neck and then pull the head out.

If something goes wrong it is likely the head will come off.

Keep in mind this procedure was done by a GP who probably has never had a case like this before and given the time and place he was the only doctor there at the moment.

Due to the dilation of 8cm it was not possible to bring the mum to a larger hospital with specialists as the baby was about to be born and would never survive in the ambulance without a doctor present with the right equipment to give oxygen.

If it is malpractice i don't know, but the doctor should have at least informed the patient better.

Nonsense.  Have you not figured out by now that every Monday morning TV poster is a medical expert, experienced police investigator, military commander and pilot?

Don't want to prejudge the doctor for tearing off the baby's head.
But why did he leave the poor girl and her parents alone ?
Why did he not accompany them in the ambulance to the other hospital ?

During a night shift there is 1 doctor working. If he joins in the ambulance, on a trip of maybe a few hours, then every emergency case coming to his hospital plus every current patient at that hospital needing emergency attention would have bad luck as there would be nobody there to help them. And that doctor plus the hospital would be liable for that.

Remember this is Thailand; things that sound straight forward in the west are not possible here.

Agree there; they will probably offer money and if its accepted that will be the end of it.

But that's how a less developed country works and what you rightfully ask for is what many posters would call a "nanny state".

As a retired doctor, I find it absolutely unbelievable that this doctor has not been immediately removed by the hospital, put under investigation by the medical board(if Thailand has such a thing) . All we hear about is he immediately took a "leave" of absence but no police or official invovlement of any kind. This doctor should actually have his license suspended at the very least...

A 17 year old mother to be raises question about when she became pregnant and by whom, Underage! Secondly the doctor should surely have known the risks involved of a premature / underage mother birth. Then to run away just like a truck driver! Sorry for the comparison not all truckies run away.

The girl and the father have been through a horrendous experience , horrific for everyone .

Now is not the time to raise any questions , if ever .

As far as I can see, no one who has commented here so far has any qualifications or experience to do so, with a couple of exceptions. Nothing but anti Thai bile.

I carried out a basic search for decapitation at birth and found many cases where this has happened and Thailand hardly features there. Wow! Must be some mistake, eh boys? They must have missed all of the massive incompetence in delivery suites all across this land, mustn't they?

No, I am not arguing that it's all ok because it happens everywhere either.

The doctor did a very bad thing by shunting his patient off in ignorance. That's a disciplinary matter.

Just sad for the Parents.

The parents of child or parents of the young mother? Sounds like the parents and relatives of the young mother can only hear the sound and smell of money. It could be badly worded article that gives that impression also.

This is a terrible, terrible thing to happen, and the mum was so young. Its a example of over zealous, incompetent, inexperienced doctors.
The thing that also gets to me,is the ridiculous reporting on this headline.
For the reporters information, heads do not "break off"' Cut,or pulled maybe but they do not break off.
