German EU rep draws flak for calling Chinese businessmen 'slit eyed'

By Asian Correspondent Staff

HAMBURG: -- GERMANY’s EU commissioner is battling accusations of racism after he described Chinese people as “slit-eyed” in a remark that also triggered calls for his resignation.

Guenther Oettinger reportedly used the derogatory term “Schlitzaugen” – slit eyes – to describe visiting businessmen from China during a speech in Hamburg last week, and is now trying to play down his comment, reports say.

According to The Independent, apart from using the term, he also said the congregation consisted of “nine men, one party, and no democracy”.

It's a big difference if you or me is calling Chinese People slit eyes or if a country's representative is doing it.

An incompetent politician like Oettinger is playing the racist card in an irresponsible manner

as he must be aware that his speech will not go unnoticed.

Some reporters are always there waiting for just another of his countless faux passes.

“nine men, one party, and no democracy”

“All of them in suits, single-breasted, dark blue jackets,” he said. “All of them had their hair combed from left to right, with black shoe polish on their hair.”

Big laughter from his audience... says quite a lot about the audience, German managers.

He may think he is entitled to joke about others as half of Germany is joking about him.

Listen to his excellent English:

Reveals an interesting anthopological truth: races (and societies) are judged mainly by their ability to organise themselves.

He is being snide because he holds the Chinese political system in contempt. The 'racist' nature of the comment is only a childish translation of that contempt. He wouldn't say that about the Japanese, who also have epicanthic eyes.

By the same token, blacks are held in generally low esteem not because they are black but because Africa is such a mess. If Africa ran as efficiently as Japan, everyone would admire the blacks regardless of their colour. And so on. This simple understanding of racial discrimination can solve a lot of problems.

Put my Nobel in the post. I thang yew.
