Airport Audits End With Positive Hopes

Featured Replies

Three officials from the United Nations’ International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) finished 10-day security audits at two of Cambodia’s three international airports late last week leaving officials hopeful of a positive outcome. ICAO’s security audit team wrapped up its work at Phnom Penh International Airport and Siem Reap International Airport on Friday after a 10-day period, spokesman for Cambodia’s State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) Sin Chansereyvutha said yesterday.

The final report of the airport security audits will be revealed 60 days after completion, he said, refusing to go into detail on the auditing procedures. However, Mr. Chansereyvutha said good results were expected based on performance and upgrades implemented by SSCA. “The information cannot be revealed because it is confidential but the result is good,” he said. “The result is good – not great – because a few small mistakes always occur.”

In April, a team of independent assessors on civil aviation security recommended that Cambodia’s airports strengthen airport fences to ensure security as well as increase security staff. “We hope the results from the security audits will be good after we did what was recommended,” Mr. Chansereyvutha said. “We are prepared well but normally there are a few weaknesses that need attention.”
