Both Cambodia and Thailand agreed on Tuesday to adopt an approach of nonviolence when dealing with those found illegally crossing the border after a meeting between the two nations’ border authorities. The meeting saw Thai Department of Border Affairs’ Border Affairs Division director Lieutenant General Kumron Kearwichyajane and the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces’ chief of Border Affairs Lieutenant General Seak Socheat come to the consensus that those found illegally crossing the border should be detained and advised, rather than shot.

Both countries agreed that resorting to violence to defend the border was counter-intuitive and outside the parameters of the law. They also agreed that taking a stance of nonviolence could further enhance national security cooperation between the neighboring nations.

Additionally, the two also agreed to implement international border crossing standards which would allow patients in critical condition from either side to seek treatment from hospitals at provinces along the border. Cambodia and Thailand also unilaterally agreed to cooperate in ensuring a reduction in illegal crossings, trafficking of any kind as well as illegal logging along the border.
