"Yellow Book"

Recommended Posts

This topic has probably been posted before but I can't find a "Yellow Book" Topic reference.

I understand that having a "Yellow Book" can make many procedures in Thailand so much easier.

Simple question !

What is the procedure for obtaining a "Yellow Book"

Here's some basic information about myself that will help persons to give me the correct information.

  • Over 50 years old
  • Non Imm Type O Visa and processing "Retirement Visa"
  • Independent finance held in a Thai bank
  • Partner in a Thai retail company
  • Married to a Thai National
  • My wife holds a corporate position with a Thai bank
  • We have a bought house in Chiangmai for the past three years

We plan to return to Chiangmai in a few weeks and I want to do the procedure for my "Yellow Book" on our return.

Any help or advise will be of great help.

The requirements are different at each ampher, They would be able to advise for your area.

Where I live, it was the following, passport translated into Thai and certified from Foreign affairs (for your name),

2 Thai witness's with Blue-books and IDs, Resident Certificate from immigration, Blue book for my residence.

some more information here

I'm in process of doing mine at Hangdong Amphur. Will get back to you when I know for sure - probably tomorrow.

From your list above, I suggest that only marriage to a Thai national and owning a house are mandatory - finance, etc., doesn't seem to matter, though a supportive visit from a neighbour and your puyai baan or equivalent are essential. Also a work permit or proof of residence.

You dont need to be married.

As I mentioned before, the requirements can varied greatly depending on ampher.

I inquired at Samut Sahkon when I lived there and they wanted birth certificate translated and the village head man had to vouch for you. others have reported that passport and blue book are enough. In Pattaya it was the list above.

If you are married, the MFA translation (it contains your name in Thai) can replace translation of passport.

You are right about the first sentence. I would suggest to the OP, if a small fee is not a problem, to do it through an experienced agent - he will need them anyway for the passport translation.

I did mine a couple of years back and it was a breeze. However they have now tightened the process, and when we wanted to add my wife's name to the YB recently we had a number of additional requirements, including the presence of both the Juristic Person of the condo where I own an apartment and of the headman of the "village" (someone we have never seen before).

Just to throw another little question into the mix; what's the "Headman of the Village" got to do with anything when we live on a newly built "Gated Secure Community" just outside Chiangmai city ?

There will be a head man for your area, It goes back to thais living in a village etc, Some of the amphers still operate on that system. I lived in a new estate in Samut Sahkon (just outside BKK) and there was a village head guy. If i wanted to get a yellow book there, I needed to meet with the head guy, and he needed to come to the ampher.

Fortunatly, Amphers in built up urban areas dont require the head man introduction. As you can imagine, he would be a very busy man in the middle of BKK.

your wife sounds pretty intelligent, take her to immigration n ask them , get info from the horses mouth

It is definitely NOT immigration to ask, yellow books are issued by the Amphoe or in some places directly by the Municipality (i.e. in Nongprue directly instead of Amphoe Banglamung)

Nothing to do with immigration. Some amphers may require a resident certificate from immigration.

We live in a well developed area of Chiang Mai with maybe 20 condos within 1km radius, not in a village, and yet the presence of the headman was required, plus Juristic Person. It wasn't the case 2-3 years ago. It might differ from amphur to amphur... we used the one near the 3 Kings Monument.

When I got mine 2 years ago at Rayong amphor it required 2 visits and it was even worse than going through a marriage visa. I needed 3 Thai witnesses not including my wife, the staff at Rayong are quite friendly and we had previously registered our marriage in the same office but we it seemed like we were there for an eternity. I have friends who got their yellow books years ago and for one of them it didn't even require a visit to the amphor at that time, it seems like Thailand is tightening up on it's procedures.

OP: As other posters also said, you – or your Thai wife – need to check with the local Amphor. Rules appear to be different from area yo area. Some have posted about how easy it was; whilst others, including myself, have experienced a quite complicated process.

Took about 30 mins maximum about ten years ago.

I went to do this last year, went to amphour, they looked at paperwork etc, and told me i need one Thai person with me as a witness, then i need the signature to prove were i lived, of the local "head man" or Juristic person.

I found him and agreed everything and went back to Aphour with Thai friend. They then told me that the residence certificate showed that my visa would run out in three weeks, and tht this was not sufficient as it had to show me staying longer. They did not point this out on first visit ( which was only three days earlier).

My Thai friend then ranted on in Thai to the officer, and informed me that I neede a copy of my blue book, again not mentioned before.

She said that these government officials are well known for only telling you that you have one incorrect item, and not informing you that there are various other items you will need, apparently they do this to Thais as well !!!

Therefore my list of items for this is as follows :-

copy of passport

copy of translated passport.

copy of blue book

copy of chanut

residence certificate with at least two months on visa

verification from Juristic person

at least one thai witness ( preferably a good english speaker )

passport size photos.

Of course, as stated before, your amphour may ask for something completley different.

I would also add that this should be a completely free transaction, so if asked to pay, this is wrong !!!

Grumpy old Man.Word of advice rather than ask here go to the Amphur concerned and get the list of requirements from them.

I got put through the hoops at Hang Dong before i got mine, maybe 18 mths ago, but those staff who  insisted on this and that have thankfully gone.

One thing you can guarantee is the requirements change on a regular basis. You can waste a lot of time, from well meaning people on here, but they dont make the rules.

Good luck a YB does make life easier, unless you move again.

Well, another hurdle. I understood that with a work permit a Nangseu Raprong Tor Mor or Proof of Residence from Immigration was not needed... but now I am told that it is.

This is for Hangdong Amphur.
