12 Month Extension - Passport Expires January

Featured Replies

Hi,

Today I'm planning to go to immigration to get a 12 month extension/permission to stay on my Non O guardian visa. I have just realised that my British passport will expire January 17th 2017.

Will they process my 12 month extension based on using this passport and then allow me to transfer it to my new passport once I get one or do I need to get a new passport first?

Many thanks.

They will do the extension but it will only be to the date your passport expires. Then when you get a new passport you will have to apply for a new extension when shortened extension ends.

Best to get a new passport now if you have enough time before your extension ends.

Thanks Ubonjoe.

Actually I've messed up this time as my previous 12 month extension expires on November 8th (Tuesday next week).

If I leave the country and come back in again can I get an additional 90 days stay on my previous 12 month extension? If so I could then apply for my new passport and when received apply for a new 12 month extension?

Please confirm. Many thanks.

Can anyone help answer my question in Post No. 3 as desperate for a quick answer?

Any help much appreciated.

If you are currently on an extension till Nov 8 then leaving and returning will only get you a 15/30 day visa exempt entry.

Assuming you have the paperwork and finances in place it may be just as well to get the extension on your current passport until Jan 17th, get a new passport and repeat the extension in January.  Seems that is probably the least hassle as well as cheapest option.

As said you would only get a visa exempt entry if you left and re-entered and the only nearby location you can enter with so little time left on your passport would be Hong Kong.

Best to go ahead and get the short extension and reapply in January after you get a new passport.

I had the same problem. if went for my extension I would have only got 6 month  due to my pp expiring the next year.

Got a new pp before the extension date and they transferd my stamps to the new pp. got the full one year.

They will only give you up to the date of your current passport.

As UJ says, get the short extension of stay. At least then, you are still on a Non Imm O entry and do not need to worry about a new visa or a conversion. Start the process of a passport renewal today! With the Christmas/New Year period coming up, it would be unwise to leave it until the last minute.
