THAI jet forced to turn back

The sudden closure of airspace over a Chinese city forced a Thai Airways flight destined for Shanghai to turn around and return to Suvarnabhumi airport yesterday. Suraphol Isaragura na Ayudhya, chief of Thai Airways International's emergency operations, said the closure of air space to make way for a military exercise was made at a moment's notice. There was no prior announcement of the closure and flight TG 664 was already two hours into its journey when it was told by Chinese aviation authorities that the airspace over one of the cities on the flight path could not be entered. The authorities advised the Airbus 330-300 with 248 passengers on board to land at the nearest airport. The captain, however, decided to fly back to Suvarnabhumi.
