BANGKOK:-- The European Parliament Committee on Fisheries has completed its four-day visit of Thailand on Friday to assess whether Thailand has made any progress on (IUU) illegal, unreported, unregulated fishing before deciding to lift or maintain the yellow card slapped on Thailand.

The committee met with Agriculture Minister Chatchai Sarikalya, the working committee to resolve IUU fishing problem, the Fisheries and Marine departments for discussions on IUU fishing.

The committee also visited the operational centre to monitor fishing situation and the shelter for victims of human trafficking in Pathum Thani.

Oh, goody. I feel another ultra-positive NNT story coming up...

and the winner is .................. no one.

The EU needs to grow a pair and dish out the red card now. Aside from the odd short lived crackdown its been the usual horrible business.

The enforcement arm here simply don't look interested in cleaning it all up properly, and too many corrupt / influential bigwigs calling the tune.

The EU is a shower of an outfit, i hope they do something positive for once

Oh yes the usual ' the EU expressed satisfaction with progress etc. etc. ' as issued by an official Thai source.

It appears they are at least getting views from other sources than the Junta.

Quote below is from Andy Hall's Fbook page.

"This afternoon MWRN international affairs advisor Andy Hall & MWRN Vice President Aung Jaw met with visiting EU IUU fishing delegation. MWRN explained to the visiting EU Parliamentary delegation challenges of migrant workers in Thailand re: policy & practice at the EU delegation Wireless Road."

Of course! In fact, I've had a sneak preview of the official Thai statement on the matter and it reads:

'The EU not only find our fisheries policies and practices to be in line with the highest standards, but to be exemplary and an inspiration to the rest of the world'!
