Cheap travel insurance

Featured Replies

I've paid US$41/year for the past three years to Allianz Global Assistance, for travel insurance that includes US$50,000 medical benefits.

Last week I was admitted to the hospital, first the ER, then two days in the ICU, then a final day in a private recovery room. The total bill was

just under US$1,800 (cheap, right?).

Not thinking anything would come of it, I submitted a claim for that amount to Allianz and provided them with digital scans of the bill and the doctor's 'comments'.

Surprisingly, I received a call from them today telling me that a check for the full amount was in the mail - no questions asked.

This is the website for US citizens: https://www.allianztravelinsurance.com/

I believe such policies are available to citizens of other countries - google it.

Good luck! I hope this helps...

Sounds good.   I'll look at the URL you posted, because I'll be traveling soon, and I like to hike off the beaten trail.  3.7 yrs ago I had a bad fall through a roof.  At the time, I had accident insurance from Bkk Bank.  They paid the maximum allowable amount toward my medical bill (Bt.30k toward a Bt.160k bill).  So that was helpful.

I looked at Allianz and liked what I saw, except two things:  they only want people with US addresses and US-based credit cards.   I'm an American, but I reside in Thailand, so I can't play ball with them.
