PTT helps rice farmers

BANGKOK, 8 November 2016 (NNT) - National energy firm PTT organizes a project to help rice farmers by allowing them to sell their rice at its head office and gas stations nationwide.

Minister of Energy Gen. Anantaporn Kanchanarat on Monday presided over the project by PTT for Thai rice farmers affected by the current price drop. The company will sell the farmers’ rice at the head office on Vibhavadi Road from 7-11 November 2016 and 688 gas stations for 90 days.

Community cooperatives and rice mills are also allowed to participate in the project.

Representative of farmers from Nakhon Phanom Daorueang Odthaisong said he earned more from selling his rice to consumers directly without a middleman. He used to sell rice in the husk at 6-7 baht/kilo to rice mills but now sells milled rice at 35-40 baht/kilo.

Representative of the Phimai agricultural cooperative Duangthan Khlongsai said community cooperatives would have more markets by selling rice to consumers directly. The cooperatives members who sold rice in the husk would also benefit from direct sales between the cooperatives and consumers, she said.

Amazing price that exceeds large store prices (21 baht/kg) but global market prices.

Too good to be true?
