Trump Administration Threatens Kennedy Center Demolition

Featured Replies

The Trump administration has told a federal court that it could pursue demolishing the Kennedy Centre in Washington if a judge rules that the venue cannot close for a two-year renovation.

In court papers filed on Monday, Justice Department attorney Brantley T. Mayers referred to the building as “decrepit” and argued that repairs led by the administration are needed to prevent further deterioration.

Court Filing Raises Demolition Prospect

Mayers said that, without renovations, the centre would keep degrading into what he described as an unsafe, decrepit structure, which would then need to be taken down. He added that a later decision would be required on what to build at the site, citing an outdoor amphitheatre overlooking the Potomac River as one possibility.

He also argued that recognising President Donald Trump for updating the venue is integral to keeping the project funded and staffed. In the filing, Mayers said that if Trump did not receive recognition, donors would leave, contributions would dry up, and structural rehabilitation would stop.

“The Trump Administration is ready to go but, without it, the Kennedy Center cannot be saved,” Mayers said, according to the documents.

Naming Dispute Underpins Lawsuit

The administration’s position aligns with the federal government’s response to a lawsuit brought by Rep. Joyce Beatty, a Democrat from Ohio and an ex officio member of the Kennedy Centre board.

Beatty’s case challenges the legality of adding Trump’s name to the building without explicit permission from Congress. She also said the overhaul plan for a two-year closure was not clearly presented to the board.

Beatty’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the administration’s demolition threat.

Previous Ruling And Inscription Decision

Earlier this year, a judge ruled that the president’s name could not legally be added to the Kennedy Centre and ordered related signage to be removed.

Instead of taking down the lettering, it was covered with a tarp. Following that, the board—described in the case as largely appointed by Trump—voted to add an inscription beneath the Kennedy Centre’s name reading: “Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump.”

The latest filing underscores that the administration is seeking to tie the renovation timeline to court acceptance of its approach, including the prospect of Trump recognition, while Beatty’s lawsuit argues those steps were unlawful.

The next court hearing on the Kennedy Centre’s future is scheduled for Thursday.

Ha. Yeah just like the donors are lining up to pay for the billion dollar ballroom. The problem with Trump's defenders is that they've gotten so far away from the truth they don't even recognize integrity at this point, it's just all about daily blather, nonsense, and total BS.

it's the Swine Don BS show.

Over the years, the Kennedy Center has hosted many class acts who metaphorically brought the house down.

But now, in a really "class act", Trump is threatening to literally bring the house down.

The other aspect of this is that Trump very likely abhors culture of any type. He doesn't have the class to appreciate music, and it's very likely that it's been a decade since he's been to a play. He doesn't read and the man is more or less a functional illiterate.

He's an incredibly insecure, self-loathing egomaniac and he's trying to make up for something lacking with his desperate bid to have his name on every building that he can possibly put it on.

Trump is the worst president in America's history and a lot of his supporters are finally starting to realize what a plague the man is.

Destroy the Kennedy Center

Don 't remember hearing about that in

his "election manifesto " .?

And no clapping in America, comrades. 🫡

Teacher who was arrested in Emporia, Kansas, during an AI data center meeting for clapping, said that the city has dropped the charges against them.

I think very few Americans will be able to remember anything he said during his campaign that has actually come to pass, perhaps for the exception of the problems on the southern border. The lying gutter thief has smoked another very large segment of Americans, and it's very likely that he will pay a high price for this during the midterms. A lot of the people that he has scammed into voting for him are good hard-working people, and they do not enjoy being lied to.

And they certainly don't enjoy being lied to you by creeps like Lutwick and Bessent, who are billionaires and do not share their financial hardships and difficulties, and live in the kind of alternate reality that super wealthy people inhabit.

and then there are millions who will go to their graves refusing to ever admit that they were conned by the biggest conman ever to set foot in the white house....lies? what lies? corruption? what corruption?

fool me once, shame on you. fool me over and over and over...shame on me.

There is very little that comes out of Donald's mouth that is the truth.....

Anyone remember his disastrous first term?

He promised to cut the deficit. He added $8T.

He promised to build a wall. He only did 458 miles out of 2,000. Most of it was repair or replacement, not new.

He promised to make Mexico pay. They didn't. We did.

He promised to unveil a new healthcare plan. It didn't exist.

He promised a middle-class tax cut. He cut taxes for the rich and huge corporations. The middle class is paying for it.

He said he wouldn't play golf as President. He made 250 visits (way more than Obama) to his own golf clubs. It cost taxpayers $150 million.

He said he'd increase economic growth by 4%. Nope. Biden did.

He promised an infrastructure plan. He had none. President Biden signed a massive one.

He promised to hire "the best people." He fired 3/4 of them and then said they were the worst ever, and they said HE was in fact the worst ever.

He promised to bring down the price of prescription drugs. He didn't: Biden did.

He promised a Hillary lock-up. Nope

Promised we'd win the trade war with China. Nope, It cost about 250,000 jobs and hurt Americans, not helped them.

He promised his corporate tax cuts would help and benefit Workers, and corporations would use that money to invest in American workers. They didn't, they used that money to buy back stocks.

He promised to revive the coal industry. Never happened: more coal jobs were lost during his presidency.

I don't recall hearing of any problems to Kennedy Center structure over last 20-30 years.

Funny how if Trump's name is put above Kennedy's, the combination of Trump's letters and size are enough stabilize the building enough for Trump to go on another gauge tasteless gold leaf rampage...

Republicans: GROW A PAIR and stop him!

I mean... he talks construction but has quite a track record in demolitions...
