Government vows to solve rice problem for the whole system

BANGKOK: -- The government will try to solve the rice problem in full cycle manner by trackling the problem at its root cause all the way to the end cause, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha announced on Tuesday.

This way of solving the problem will involve water management, reduction of rice cultivation land, cost cuts and change of the crops to be cultivated in a proper manner among others, said the prime minister.

However, he noted that the public appeared to be only interested in solving the problem at its end cause without considering what the government has been doing to tackle the rice problem.

He admitted that many farmers still stick to what they used to do for generations – that is only planting rice to make a living while, at the same time, expecting the government to come to their rescue when their crops are damaged by flood or whatever or rice price has plummeted.

Besides farmer, the prime minister said that the government would also have to look after rice millers and exporters by securing markets for rice exports and adding value to rice. But this undertaking is moving slowing because the root cause of the problem has not been rectified.

The prime minister said the government had adopted the advice of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej – that is to tackle the problem, starting with the root cause and then the end cause of the problem.

Oh no, the "vowing thing" is back.

I was always nonplussed by previous government's vowers, those leaders and high ranking bureaucrats who come out publicly to promise with abandon what they will definitely not do. And I had still some respect for this military government not using "the vow" as abundantly as all the others had.

Guess what, it's baaack! This government is just getting more and more mainstream...., Man, you're Military, you don't have to vow!

With Prayut's 20-year reform plan and staying in control of the government for as long he might actually achieve some of the agricultural reforms.

Easy to say now he can forget about it for another period. Throw out the billions then when that is done and the farmers are placated, throw out the fluff for the  anti subsidy brigade to enjoy.

Then forget about what he has said and done (and hope everyone else has to) until next rice crisis and repeat cycle.

What, no song?

"However, he noted that the public appeared to be only interested in solving the problem at its end cause without considering what the government has been doing to tackle the rice problem."

Talk about adding insult to injury.  It's the junta itself that is guilty as sin of pursing the above policy, not the public.  These guys will never ever realise that they are way behind the intellectual curve compared with the average person.  The condescension, arrogance and narcissism is staggering.  It would be funny if they weren't actually in charge.  The country is being managed by a little coterie of clueless, spoiled children.
