Thai temple's attempt to be LGBT-positive with 'Butch' and 'Ladyboy' bathrooms

TRANG: -- In the Southern province of Trang, a temple built separate bathrooms for "ladyboys" and “butch's" as a way to make LGBT Buddhists feel welcome.

Photos of the toilets at Sarikaram Temple circulated online this week. Besides the obvious men's and women's, the signs on the other two bathrooms read the Thai words “toot,” which is a derogative term for gay men and transgender women, and “tom” a Thai term to describe woman with a masculine identity.

According to the temple's abbot, Phra Kru Sangwornthamwimol, the people who come to the temple are of all genders and most places only have bathrooms for men and women so the "third-genders are shy to use them."

Why all the complexities?

Just name them "Theirs" and "Ours"...

Why can't the ladyboy use the ladies and the butch lesbian the men's? Four toilets seems a bit much. What about the bisexuals? Which toilet do they use? Also does they ladyboy toilet have a urinal or just a sit down toilet?

When a woman enters a toilet for MEN or LADIES, she has a cubicle in which to sit and relax. When a lady boy enters a MEN toilet he/she can also use the cubicles. A Tom can still use the cubicles in either facility.

Many ladyboys do not have outside plumbing if they have had a chop-n-drop procedure and thus they must sit. A Tom entering a MENS toilet cannot stand up at a urinal. Best solution, let ladyboys and Toms use the cubicles in the MENS.

Bingo!  This should be a non-issue.

....was told that...."Buddhism does not condone homosexuals and lesbians"....

...doubt it would be different for 'ladyboys'.....

....I guess that really......nothing is real here.....all pretend......

...wow.....

Be practical, put signs for can/can't pee standing.

I don't understand why sexual orientation has anything to do with toilets, unless one has some regard for the days when toilets were "pick-up joints".  Why bother with what's really pointless affectation?

The toilets in my home are uni-sexual. No problems there so far. Last time I went to the movies, a girl was cleaning the men's bathroom. She  continued doing her job as I did my business. No one batted an eye. Some bathrooms are for handi-capped, and uni-sex as well.  I was on the infield at the Kentucky Derby and, due to copious beer consumption, went to the men's room. The line for the ladies room was very very long. The line for the men's urinals was short and quick. I made it and began going with the flow when a very happy girl ooched her way onto the urinal and looked at me and smiled, just peeing happily away.

How about two, unisex restrooms: 'Normal' and 'Others'?

You pose another problem of course, which toilets do the Gay men and Lesbian women use? Should they be allowed in their own gender WC?

Maybe we should just have no urinals any more and everyone get a cubicle with a communal washroom?

So farang ladyboys all can read Thai script??

Maybe we should just have no urinals any more and everyone gets a cubicle with a communal washroom?  If you did that there would be twice as many cubicles at least, and so it would cut the queues you tend to get at the ladies.

You will just have to put your make-up on and do your hair with the men washing their hands girls....

Ah yes, but you try going in the ladies, even by mistake. Heaven forbid!

I am sure a large percentage of the 'members of the cloth' will find the ladyboy's toilet useful.

Why do you want to know the answer to your last question?

Agree. But It's really a safe space for women. Nothing to do with guys or women urinating. The whole problem is some guys who still have penises want to invade this space, I doubt if any woman would have a problem with a castrated man.

Okay, good point. The girls can have a powder room and the men a washroom, both without toilets. But then do you have to provide Tom and Toot rooms for them too?

It boils down to space and practicality really. If equality means being equal then we will have to find more space for all these facilities.

Well, what I think is that men and women should have a safe space. Most men accept Toms who are very masculine, and most women accept ladyboys who are very feminine, at least in Thailand. So, I don't really see a problem, in Thailand. They both integrate very well. Of course there is a problem with the sex industry,  where we have people adopting these personas to make money. A ladyboy who isn't really a ladyboy, is always gonna be problem.

That is so easy.

Ladyboys to lady room, Tomboys to man room. What else?
