BANGKOK — A controversial plan to remake the Chao Phraya River will break ground in June, city officials announced Monday.

A design submitted by two universities contracted to do the work is expected to sail through the cabinet next month, clearing the way for the first phase of construction to begin seven months later under a five billion baht contract.

I can guarantee the Chao Phraya will NEVER be that colour

Yodpiman pier is closed today. Flooded.

Opened last year. Fancy shops, fancy eateries, etc.

As is Tha Thien. Flooded.

None of the river taxis are stopping at either.

And now this pie-in-the-sky project is green-lighted.

Who does the thinking in these parts?

Why not build the road totally covered by tree's so we can walk/drive there in shade? It's far too hot in the sun.

But amazingly, even right up in the heart of Bangkok, the river is teeming with fish ! so it can,t be all that bad :)

would like to see the before (current) photo of that area. melbourne revitalized their riverside area many years back under kennit. wonder if the good general can make it happen.

JoePai correctly said that the Big Muddy will never be that colour. True, but that does not stop the fish breeding, it is only when the water is heavily polluted that fish kills occur. The muddy water colour is due to the vast amounts of sediment carried from upcountry.

June is a long way off. Methinks they are breaking wind on this one.

Nothing that Thailand could do, will ever compare to Melbourne ! I think a current photo would show the poor metal clad slum homes; same as on most Thai canals.

This Chao Phraya development will never ever happen during elected government. Only junta government with draconian laws against dissent can make this happen. This is a big money project that will benefit the already wealthies and perhaps some side money to the people who make this happen. The crumbs will be taken up by the people who will toil hard to complete the project.

But Melbourne doesn't have everyone using the Yarra as a garbage dump

true it is not quite as dirty as the yarra. there have been successive claims that the yarra will be clean enough to swim in in X number of years. they are still some way off however there are some great facilities like the rowing club.

Shouldn't these sort of projects be left to an ELECTED government to decide?  Not to mention public forums where the PEOPLE get to have their say too.

I assume there is just too much money involved and the junta want their share of the pie before they get turfed out.
