BANGKOK: -- The chairman the Public Sector Anti Corruption Commission (PACC) says about 6,000 people were involved in alleged mal-practices and corruption in the controversial rice pledging scheme.

PACC chairman says 6,000 persons were involved in rice pledging scheme scam.

The chairman the Public Sector Anti Corruption Commission (PACC) says about 6,000 people were involved in alleged mal-practices and corruption in the controversial rice-pledging scheme.

Gen Phaiboon Khumchaya, also Justice Minister, and PACC chairman said these 6,000 names were found to have involvement in the rice scheme and would be held responsible to paying compensation to the state for the damages caused.

The names were compiled by the Ministries of Finance, Commerce, Interior, and Prime Minister’s Office.

Gen Phaiboon said these people were sorted in three groups.

The first group comprise 2,000 names at executive level people who include politicians, ministers, and members of the subcommittee relevant to rice policy.

The second group which comprises the remaining 4,000 names are government officials of state agencies and state organisation who implemented the scheme, he said.

He said these 6,000 names were held responsible for the damages inflicted on the state by the rice pledging scheme.

But he made clear that not all of these officials would be ordered to pay for the losses, saying it depended on further investigation and examination of how much they were engaged and why.

After the investigation and examination, the PACC would then report to the prime minister and the cabinet for acknowledgement of who would be held responsible for the remaining 80% of the total damages of 178 billion baht from the rice pledging scheme.

And how many people will be charged with corruption?  And how many will be prosecuted?  And how many will be convicted?  And how many will make payoffs so that their sentences are suspended?  There, the number is down to zero.  Makes things a lot easier, right?

we all know that there are several govt people involved in this and are the ones that have made a killing from the corrupt practices used so it is now a matter of seeing the names listed. Will be interesting to see the amount of govt ministers/ptp people involved and whether or not they will be able to "buy" their way out of being locked up or even face charges. Would be nice to actually see the names of these scumbags printed but even that is doubtful.

I remember nearly two years ago ending up at some girl's parent's house with some friends after a night out. This girl was in her early 20s and lived in a very nice house. Her parents were staying in another home in Hua Hin. I remember seeing 2 nice cars on the driveway, also. I asked this girl what her parents did for a living and she said "They sell rice".

It didn't make sense at the time, but it sure does now.

They have their names, now get them all to pay back all the money each have profited by plus interest else go to jail.

All Govt people on the list, no Mill owners, no rice exporters, no rice stockers?

I thought for a moment that something big was going to hit the fan. But when I read further in the story I see where there is an escape hatch for those who can buy their way out or who are too high up to ever be prosecuted.

There is sure to be a very selective prosecution process of those on the list.

Sorted into three main groups:

Enemies

Friends

Generous donors

Charge the small fry,let the big fish go,the way it works here.

That's the first phase. Next they will go after the business people. All those charged will go through the judiciary process and will take the next 100 years to be convicted. Well unless the junta PM will use his trump 44 card and issue a blanket executive order to all and sundry. Still hilarious by the number of people on the list. Could end up in the 10s of thousand.

Hmm, here I thought the damages due to the rice scheme was an amount over 500 Billion. It is now apparently down to 178 billion. Something's off I would say..

Some time ago the Junta was talking of about around 600 people suspected, now they cite 6000. It seems the junta has discovered geometric series so I guess next step will be to announce 60000 suspects.

Is the junta trying to achieve some kind of Guinness world record.

So who would you expect the Public Sector Anti Corruption Commission to name?

BTW rice exporter Siam Indica has been hit very hard.

Wonder how many army military relatives are among the 6000? We know that answer.

Next? They are already going after the business people. You know, Thaksin's mates from President Agri/Siam Indica, those who got secret, but very profitable commissions, to move G2G rice.

The same number as were involved in the Shinawatra/PTP scam. Is that what we know?

Well this just shows what everyone knows , that corruption is so deeply entrenched in Thai society that to eradicate it will take a mammoth proportions of prosecutions, at the end  you'll run out of people to run the country..........................................:cheesy:

My Thai wife already knows this, but good post, nonetheless.

From the article

For the third group which is the private sector comprising rice millers, and warehouse operators, Gen Phaiboon said investigation and examination are still underway to see their connection with those in the two groups.

And how many % of corrupt people would 60 000 be? :clap2:

You need ad at least 2 more zeroes to get close any real change.

Wasn't Yingluk charged and fined 35 billion?  That's 100% more than zero

First off- one does not start a sentence with 'and'.

Secondly what do you suggest- just not bother in the first place?

Dealing with corruption here is about baby steps, not wielding a big hammer- otherwise you cannot break a culture that is ingrained and most people see nothing wrong with.

Technically you shouldn't start a sentence with a conjunction. But who the hell cares when you're writing for effect?

See the second to last paragraph in the link included in the OP. Those individuals are mentioned in there.

And a preposition is a bad word to end a sentence with.   But who cares these days?  Language changes, e.g.  txt spllng for one, which I personally hate.

Don't let the 6,000 scare you.   Build the prison & start freezing & seizing  at least some of the assets of the some of the most likely guilty biggies, right now.   Start getting ready to seize passports at arrest too.
