Unusual sea tide forces evacuation of residents living close to the beach in Krabi

KRABI: -- Local residents living by the beach in Krabi were forced to quickly evacuate from their homes last night after the sea level rose unusually high.

They woke up late at night and began to move their belongings to higher ground after the seawater approached close to their homes.

They were afraid if the unusual high sea tide had connection with the earthquake in New Zealand as such high sea tide at Tha Leh in Krabi Muang District was never experienced in the past 50 years.

But chief of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office in Krabi Mr Phaisarn Khunsri comforted the local people saying the high sea tide during the past few days was from the Full Moon phenomenon when the Earth and the Moon came closest in 68 years, thus causing the sea level to rise unusually high during the Full Moon day.

The sea water inundated Chao Fah beach road in Krabi, but has receded today.

It's called the Gravitational Pull

It's called the Gravitational Pull

Indeed, so should the water not be further away iso closer?

yes and no... :)

It will be further away (low tide) in some areas, and higher in others, (high tide)

The distance a tide travels shoreward is directly related to the height of the tide. Tidal forces can be amplified or diminished by local geographical features but are still dependent on the distance of the Moon to the Earth, and its relative position throughout its orbit.

This page from NOAA might help a bit, (http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/kits/tides/tides03_gravity.html)

In the Fiji Islands, Nigali Passage Gau Island is a small inlet to a lagoon that on an outgoing tide, the tidal current actually starts to run towards the shore after a larger passage to the north lowers the water level in the lagoon, thus creating a siphon effect... Also makes for great viewing of the local shark population!
Cheers!

Yeah, it really sucks.

Blame it on the ghosts of past fishermen

At least Thai's might understand this logic  :whistling:

Well,  guess  some people  just  live  not  only a bit too close to the sea, but also

not  high enough above sea level.  When will they  ever learn.  Oh  right

that line  is in a song.

Geezer

None of your answers click my disk..

The moon, the closest since my birth,

Nov, '48, is actually 3-400 kilometers closer than usual. Why would a slightly higher tide make people have to move for a day or two. May have been a tidal surge from down under, or a result of coming, and coming again sea level rise..

whatever.. Aloha
