Police deny they used guns in arrest of Swedish drunk on Samui

Police have said they did not use guns to arrest a Swedish tourist who was drunk and disorderly in the Mae Nam area of Koh Samui yesterday morning.

One policeman ended up with a split lip after he was punched in the face by the 50 year old tourist. Another cop was hit in the left shoulder.

Arrested was a man named as Bastram Han Patrick. Locals had called the cops early on Thursday after the man was noisy and making a nuisance of himself in the road.

Panuwat Saelim said that the Swede was saying something like "keppi" so he decided to look up the word on his phone. The drunk grabbed his phone and threw it down. Then he punched Panuwat in the mouth.

Another cop Anuchart Pensawat came to his aid and was hit in the left shoulder before the drunk ran off down the road. But he was soon apprehended.

A video of the incident was posted on Facebook from a dash cam on the "Ruam Phon Khon Samui" page. It was posted by Suraporn Sripaew who said the incident occurred in front of the Mae Nam police booth.

Commenters mostly praised the police for their actions.

But some claimed that guns were drawn in subduing the tourist, who was not armed.

Both police denied this and said that posters should get their facts straight before damaging the good name of the police by posting incorrect information.

I thought they banned the pointy-finger photos.

As I said on another  thread yesterday, the photographer responsible is either (a) on holiday, (b) been told to stop it, or (c) retired. Unfortunately, it appears that it is (a)!

keppi?

Yes, clearly the poor man was looking for Bang Kapi in Bangkok and the wicked Thai police in Samui were pretending they had never heard of it. Oh the iniquity.

He deserves all the nice Thai hospitality he is going to get, maybe some of it in a hospital.

It is never a good idea to punch a copper in the face.

That would be a 'death by cop' offense in the US.  The drunk should be glad that Thai cops are not of that 'cowboy' disposition. .

In Finland there is Finnish speaking Finns and Swedish speaking Finns, like French and Flemish speakers in Belgium.

Actually as dual Finnish, Swedish citizen I can also speak English....

But you are correct, Finland has two official languages, half million Finnish citizen have Swedish as native language.

However, the name of the Swede is neither Swedish or Finnish.

How come so many contributors lambast police in Thailand for everything ranging from petty corruption through to cooperation in organised crime activities, violence aginst citizens, etc - anything outside normal, appropriate policing behaviour.

But as soon as some misguided dopey tourist or resident (either thru drug or alcohol abuse) exhibits a predisposition to petty violence they express support for police to dish out covert beatings or other extra-judicial violence as several of the above posts exemplify.

No wonder local police become confused, even schizophrenic in their public responses.  The cunning ones will learn that if they can keep things quiet, they can get away with going beyond legal restraints in the course of their daily work.

Anyone of us, or our families, might suffer for endorsement of that deceitfulness one day.  Police officers have to deal with stupidity and thuggish behaviour when it arises; that's part of their job.

I sympathise with that part of their work but they should be able to handle incidents professionally and without recourse to  illegal actions.

They didn't made anything wrong, in my opinion...but as thai are 99% of the time they have to lie, even when there is not need to...

I agree but I think FYI  'they didn't do anything wrong' would be a better way of expressing your opinion. Anyway if I was a policeman and some <deleted> was acting in this way then I would feel free to apprehend him in any way available to me.
