What constitutes a "real" buisness!!

Featured Replies

Following on from a thread running on here about coffee shops. It was mentioned by a poster Thaibeachlover and I quote

"I don't consider selling coffee a real business any more than I consider hairdressing or selling fashion a real business".

I totally disagree with that statement  I would say. A buisness is a buisness regardless of what type of buisness. If it is self funding profit making  and employs people then it is a "real" buisness.

So not withstanding that people will come on and say I've been or my mate has been more to the point burnt by building or funding a buisness for there partner. This thread is not about that it's about what is a real buisness.

To kick it off my mrs as some will know by reading has a Buisness primerily a hair dressing buisness however she has diversified into selling coffee and genral shop type sales (not fresh food/meat/fish ect mainly drink crisps dried noodles you get the drift) her logic was they come in for there hair sit waiting browse the store selection and buy captive audience if you like. now the buisness is strong and self funds and makes a healthy profit. in 6 months it has repayed the build costs and fixtures and fittings associated with running the buisneses. she has one part time staff now which she is talking about increasing her to full time. She now makes a very healthy profit after overheads which is wages and electric and stock buying. so how can that not be a buisness.

PS I have not invested a bhat into this buisness.

Clarification

Any business that makes enough money is a "real" business. no matter what it is. People saying otherwise are just jealous.

A business does not even have to employ employees to be considered a real business.

Plenty of businesses that don't make a net profit for several years.

Like Twitter. Is that a business? It doesn't make much net profit.

anything "they" say  it  is

One where you can own over 51%

You are 100% correct - that person is wrong to the point of maybe they are joking?

Yes even a small business run by one person is a 'business'.

Well done to DeepinThailands wife for building what sounds like a nice business for herself.

The "real business" term seem more linked to proxy Thai Co. Ltd. that owns property for an alien (farang), and not doing any other business than that – leasing it to the alien – that's not considered "real business", and the company limited in question need to perform some other business also, to be a "real business"...

A Thai starting any kind of business and making a living of it, or just some extra income, must be considered "real business", no matter if the business "only" sell coffee, dress hair, or supply lemonade for kids outside a school, or...

Amazon didn't make a profit for years.

Look at them now

Leaving aside any profit I understand it can take years to turn a profit. It was mainly the they aren't "real" businesses that got me wondering.

Good for your wife - large businesses can take a while to turn a profit but I would always expect that small neighborhood businesses should and could profit right off... to worry about one ridiculous comment on TV forum is a waste of time... enjoy your wife's success.

Thanks not worried just struck me as a strange comment. Yes agreed about profits once the cost of the building of shop and the fixtures and fittings were covered everything else stock and wages take care of there self's.

It's just TV silliness - - just ask the people at Starbucks if selling coffee is a real business... I am going to guess the shareholders believe it is...
