AUTHORITIES have been recruiting school students to help raise public awareness about overuse of antibiotics as part of a plan to cut cases of drug resistance by half in the next five years.

Excessive or unnecessary use of antibiotics can lead to drug resistance, which has led to many deaths.

Each year, more than 80,000 people in Thailand are found to have developed resistance to antibiotics. Of these patients, between 20,000 and 30,000 will die.

Perhaps it's the advertising hype from Big Pharma that teaches people to expect that a pill is always there to cure all ills?
I wonder if the Students will stress that 80% of antibiotics are used in the farming industry on the animals we eat.
Thereby giving us a trace dose every time we consume their products.

I read that a trace dose can cause sensitivity whereas a largeer clinical dose taken over a week to 10 days should not?

They need to recruit students to stop doctors from over prescribing/handing out antibiotics? The only reason the public overuses antibiotics is that they received them by doctors to treat just about every ailment imaginable.

Perhaps setting responsible medical standards and enforcing them would be a more effective approach.

Sorry folks. It's early in the morning and I forgot what country I am in.

Anyone have a link for this story in Thai ?

I have a few people I would like to send the Thai link to who are "pill poppers" whenever they get a runny nose or cough

Thanks

Good to start changing social attitudes with the young but we really need to get a handle on the reliance on antibiotics in modern farming practices if we hope to make a real difference.

Might be a good idea to make it illegal to be able to buy them like sweets over the counter?

Enforcement of regulations in Thailand is a herculean task.

they might want to try telling the doctors who frequently prescribe anti-biotics for people with a virus; e.g. a cold or flu. happens all the time.

Sometimes, I get to thinking that many doctors are only taught how to prescribe pills!

I know a number of Thais who appear to panic if they become ill.

Will visit the nearest Dr and expect to walk away with a bag of pills - and they do!
Then they will serially visit various hospitals and clinics and every time get the bag of pills!

My wife got anti sickness pills from two sources, along with other pills that must not be taken with the anti sickness meds - Go figure!

The anti sickness pills were 40mg from one source and 10 mg from another.

When the problem dragged on I read up on the pills with Google and encouraged her to stop all the meds, including the obligatory antibiotics that all sources supplied her with, again different ones and different strengths!  This was in Thailand.

We returned to Spain and there they diagnosed a problem with low stomach acid which was burning her esophagus - not a bacterial throat infection at all!!!!!!!

Just who can you trust?

Glad to say that her problem has been resolved with a slight lifestyle change.

This is a good start, students are a good platform to spread information and indeed participate in actively changing lifestyle habits. I have noted the once regular over indulgence in lao kao consumption drop in my area, and firmly believe the wide condemnation and concern for their parents health by the younger generation has influenced the consumption levels.

You are quite right, particularly about antibiotics in food products.

For example farmed salmon around the world is now even classified as dangerous because of the high level of antibiotics. And there is plenty of that about in the larger supermarkets in Thailand. Eat it at your peril.

Maybe the same applies to any sort of farmed seafood species? The aquaculture industry in Thailand is large like many other Asian countries. Who knows what drugs are being used to reduce mortality rates.

All very noble however the incidence of ICE in the community its effects  and the problems it is now causing world wide would be a more constructive topic for the students to cover,  however to each he's own they say..................................:coffee1:

Again, you are spot on - I haven't had or needed a doctor for getting on for 10 years. They are puppets of big pharma and basically useless once the diagnosis of the problem has been established. I am my doctor and heal myself with food. Over rated profession really as far as I'm concerned. The only real doctors are holistic ones as they are not beholden upon big pharma and understand crucial aspects of health such as nutrition and the paramount importance of the gut microbiome!! Doctors don't heal people anyway, we heal ourselves, our body is amazing at doing this. A professional is only as good as the tools he has and this is where main stream doctors failing lies. Synthetic drugs are useless as all they do is treat the symptoms, often as you say, requiring additional drugs several times over to deal with the side affects of previously given drugs and the unwelcome baggage of the side affects they bring with them.

Side affects are the body's way of expressing that you have something alien in the body that shouldn't be there so lets attack these foreign chemicals and create mayhem in the body whilst we're at it!!
