Pope warns against 'epidemic of animosity' as he appoints 17 new cardinals

Pope Francis has appointed 17 new cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church, 13 of whom are under 80 years-old making them eligible to replace him in future.

They come from Italy, Central African Republic, Spain, the US, Brazil, Bangladesh, Venezuela, Belgium, Mauritius, Mexico and Papua New Guinea.

At the ceremony he said an ‘epidemic of animosity’ against people of other races and religions was hurting the weakest in society, urging caution against the rise of populist nationalism.

Nothing wrong with "Populist nationalism " That is democracy. Just depends on what countries are compatible with democracy and which ones are not. Nothing to do with the Vatican. Typical of religion to be preaching its version of how the rest of the world should act.

What about the "epidemic" of cover ups by the church protecting their own against paedophile charges ?

"Take the log out of your own eye before you take the splinter out of others".

Put them in sack cloth and sprinkle them with ashes take away their shoes and send them forth into the world to preach. To much pomp and ceremony for my liking. They in the end sound to much like politicians. They seem to worship the same gold ornaments that the people did when Moses came down for the mountains and smashed the stone tablets. We are still wandering around in the wilderness.

This vastly wealthy organization has exploited the poor, and not so poor, for centuries. Corrupting popular teachings by adding bits of paganism and making alterations as necessary to keep the masses interested and under influence. As they got more powerful they were able to use violence to enforce their authority without much compassion. And enforce it on peoples when tagging along with invaders and conquering armies.

Somehow finding this organization a haven for sexual predators, pedophiles as well isn't so surprising.

Poverty - something they contribute to and exploit rather than fight against. Worse than the mafia.

Hope he has done criminal background checks on them all......

Seems that the "epidemic of animosity" is usually caused by followers of one established cult / religion who refuse to accept the possibility of followers of another established cult / religion having an equally valid point of view.

I think it more likely there is an "epidemic of apathy" in the world. There seems to be a sense of self absorption and blindness to the world's major issues in which you can't even get half the US voter population to get up and vote for the highest office. You would think with Facebook, Twitter and other forms of social media, people would tend to share and care but it doesn't seem to happen. We need a new saying against Timothy Leary's "Turn on, tune in, drop out". Maybe "Turn on your I-phone, tune into Facebook and drop out of the real world".
