Department of Disaster Prevention readies assistance measures for winter season

BANGKOK, 23 November 2016 (NNT) - The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) is planning assistance measures for those living in cooler regions, as well as measures to prevent forest fires.

Department Director-General Chatchai Promlert said the northern region will soon experience cold temperatures, as well as an increased risk of forest fires and road accidents due to the tourism high season. He revealed that the DDPM has therefore planned assistance measures, deploying officials to patrol risk areas and surveying the needs of residents during the winter season, especially the elderly, people with disabilities and low-income earners.

The department has also planned measures to prevent forest fires by encouraging farmers to bury their crop waste instead of burning and by banning fire activities outside control areas.

The way Thais adapt to cold spells these measures are probably just ensuring that everyone has three coats to wear - at the same time.

I thought global warming was the problem.

People have lived through the cold season for centuries, or more, what's the difference now?
