NCPO to adopt new crowd management at Sanam Luang

BANGKOK, 24 November 2016 (NNT) - The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) will adopt a new crowd management plan in anticipation of more mourners coming to pay their respects to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej during New Year holidays.

According to NCPO Spokesperson Col Piyapong Klinphan, the crowds at Sanam Luang have so far been under control and that the number of security officers will be increased as more people are expected to visit Sanam Luang.

Under the new crowd management plan, people coming from faraway provinces will be the first group to enter Dusit Maha Prasart Throne Hall, so that they can leave the capital before sunset.

Bangkok residents and those from the vicinity will be allowed to pay their respects in the afternoon because they live closer to the Grand Palace. The Ministry of Interior will coordinate with the Royal Thai Army to set up rest areas across the country to accommodate people traveling long distances.

Meanwhile, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is set to move food tents from the south of Sanam Luang to the north. Fire extinguishers will be placed near the tents where cooking gas is used to prepare meals for the mourners.

People have been asked to leave Sanam Luang and areas surrounding the Grand Palace after 9 p.m. The Grand Palace will be closed from December 1st to 2nd, according to the Bureau of the Royal Household, as royal ceremonies will be held to mark the 50th day of the King's demise.

The BMA will also launch a big cleaning activity on the same day to clean the area around the Grand Palace which will be closed to tourists on December 5th and 6th. However, the palace will be open to the mourners.

Does anyone know the rules for going there? We are planing to go there early (we will arrive at Mo Chit before 4a.m.) and hope to get in among the earliest groups. The thing is that they talk about cue numbers but sofar non of my coworkers have managed to provide new information on how it really works as all information they show/refer too is at least one month old!
