webfact
New charter to impose harsh penalties on corrupt politicians BANGKOK, 25 November 2016 (NNT) - Politicians guilty of corruption will face harsher penalties as the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) is preparing to include life and death sentences in the organic law on political parties. CDC chairman Meechai Ruchuphan said the drafting team will incorporate Section 149 of the Criminal Code into the punishment for selling and buying political positions. Those found guilty of the crime will face a jail term of 5-10 years, life imprisonment or an execution, depending on the severity of their offenses. He explained that the proposal was actually intended to scare and prevent corrupt people from seeking political positions in an unethical way. Meechai said the content of the organic law on political parties mostly remained the same, with the concepts of public participation and common ownership among political party members being the essence of the law. The CDC chairman added that the deliberation of organic laws will meet the deadline if the two draft acts pertaining to political parties and the Election Commission are completed according to schedule. Meanwhile, the National Reform Steering Assembly is preparing to announce its past year performance on November 30th. -- nnt 2016-11-

Brer Fox
"He explained that the proposal was actually intended to scare......" So the message is clear. Relax politicians, the threat of 5 -10 years jail, life imprisonment or execution is only intended to scare you and does not really apply if you are caught out behaving corruptly. So, no change - situation normal.

FunkyDunky58
More Blah Blah Blah. They could make it a mandatory death sentence, but it won't change much. How many have been ACCUSED of corruption and then we've been told that the 'investigation' didn't find anything? More hot air as usual.
zaphod reborn
Any plans to actually incarcerate corrupt politicians, or just the usual choice of options: 1. Let the scumbag flee to Cambodia, Laos or Dubai; 2. Take 15 years to let the case run through the judicial system and appeals, and allow the scumbag to escape punishment because he is too old 3. Let the scumbag join the monkhood absolving him of any culpability 4. Let a judge or appeals court suspend his sentence, because the scumbag cooperated 5. Let the scumbag make the usual brown envelopes deposit and the case is either dropped or dismissed for insufficient evidence 6. Just wait until another government favorable to the scumbag comes into power, and let them drop the case. Nothing changes in Thailand when it comes to corruption. Emster23
Selective enforcement of the law is worrisome, to say the least. Corruption etc only done by opposition, as we in power are like driven snow.
phantomfiddler
Methinks the death penalty sounds a little harsh, but a lifetime ban on involvement in politics sounds reasonable if crimes are proven.

Yes, too harsh the ban should run after being strung up by the balls for a week at least!
Dumbastheycome
No problem with the proposal. It is reasonable to expect the judicial system to define guilt and outcome appropriate.

Hmmmm, I guess the rather obvious question is, .... How unethical is a coup? These clowns are completely lacking in self-awareness, aren't they? Elected corrupt politicians or unelected corrupt politicians (or assimilated : people involved in government but whose main job is not necessarily politics, if you see what I mean)? That is the question....:)
