Visa exempt - how long can I stay in Thailand?

Featured Replies

Ok I've looked into this a fair bit and, since I failed to be sufficiently organised to get an METV, I just wanted to confirm how long I can stay in Thailand on visa exempt status.

  • I arrived at the airport, got visa exempt stamp, I am allowed to stay for 30 days.
  • I can renew this visa for another thirty days by going to the immigration office in Chiang Mai
  • I can stay for 60 days total

After that:

  • I can make a 'visa' run to another country (e.g. Malaysia). If I return by plane I can get another visa exemption - 30 days, start the whole thing over again
  • I can do this as many times as I like

But (and this is my main question): someone was telling me that you can only stay in Thailand for 90 days out of every six months on a tourist visa. i.e. my visa run would only get me another month in Thailand as I would not be allowed to renew that one. Is that correct? I read somewhere else that there were no restrictions on visa exempt status - you just have to show up at the airport with a ticket out of the country and you can do that as many times as you like.

I'm wondering if the confusion is between being 'visa exempt' and having a 'tourist visa'? How many consecutive days can I stay in Thailand if I'm visa exempt?

Thanks a lot!

You can apply for a 30 day extension of your visa exempt entry at immigration for a fee of 1900 baht.

You could get a another 30 day visa exempt entry by going flying out and back and then get 30 day extension.

The 90 days in 6 months rule was rescinded 8 years ago.

Rather than trying to stay here on visa exempt entries I suggest you go to a nearby embassy or consulate to get a single entry tourist that would allow a 60 day entry that can be extended for 30 days.

Be aware that your airline can refuse you to board without a visa or air ticket out of Thailand within 30 days.
