As with all topics like this its fairly arbitrary, as everyones definitions of decent, cheap, expensive, well located, convenient etc etc differ massively. Many people would think 800 baht at Dynasty Inn on Soi 4 is all of the above, many others would think anything but that.

i am pretty sure pattaya is cheaper than bangkok. half the price for twice the fun as far as i can see.

surrounded by drunken yobs pretty much every where. Do walking St once and that's about it unless your a sex tourist then it's pure heaven
Personally I like pattaya but it's like comparing new York to forte Lauderdale!

News sells, might suck a few more tourists in!!

Ha ha I just love these Bangkok is number one reports because even though they come from multiple respected sources the bashers always always get really upset about it and generally have a big cry

Trip advisor has a massive massive following so

Suck it boys!!

Personally, I would rather visit Hanoi (or other spots in Vietnam/Cambodia/Laos) than many of the other places on the list. Who are these "People"?

Hanoi's OK but Saigon's more to my liking. Personal taste. Cambodia and Laos seem to elicit unpleasant anecdotes of banditry, although they have their charms, both human and for sightseeing.

Read the headline -- it says "That People Actually Want To Visit".

I lived in both cities and am now in Hanoi where there are thousands of tourists - people who actually want to visit - last year tourist visits to Vietnam increased by 35%!

It also adds "to spend a week". Do many people want to spend a week in Hanoi? Never been myself so cannot comment but once had three days in HCMC and that was plenty, would not fancy it for a week.

A capitol city where you can get a decent room downtown with A/C for $25, eat on the street for $2 and get a nice mango snack for $0.60?  And spend a great day gawking pretty much for free?

Edit: Sure, you can blow a big wad in BKK.  But you don't have to.

I always smile when I realize that I'm getting paid to be here...

Where are these places that you can pay in dollars? Perhaps you could quote prices in THB which the currency we use in Thailand

Totally agree. Fortunately Hanoi is nothing like HCMC which is a sprawling mass of nothingness. I admit it's starting to change but Hanoi has much more to offer. Comparing either city to Bangkok is irrelevant unless you can only visit one of them

Cha-am Thailand... 2 Star 30 Sq/M unit in Cha-am for 1 month cost Bt 7000 + Bt1000 ( less for long term) for power and water and A/C, 14th floor great view.  Beautiful beach 100 metres. Restaurant meals and good Bt 200 Aus $7.50.  This nice room equals  $Aus 258. per month = Aus $8.50 a day .= Aussies and others can live for ever in comfort on aged pension.  This will include a few massages per week and other pleasures.  Beer in a bar Aus $2.  You can even include a small rental motor bike.

Perth Australia... 2 star 30 Sq/M  unit ground floor looking into someones back yard 10 miles from beach, $3000 per/month = Aus $100 per day,  if you can find one.  Meals about $25 if you can find a restaurant that cheap.  Beer in a pub $8.  Massages $120.  Other pleasures none.  The choice is yours.

I own a 5th floor one-bedroom apartment in Walcott St, Mt Lawley with 180 degree city panorama, fully furnished, approx 3K from CBD, rented for $210 per week, and I was bloody lucky to get that tenant on a 12-month lease, the Perth property market is saturated with vacant flats & houses and the owners are dropping rentals by the day in desperation to hook a tenant. I'd be delirious with joy if I could get anything close to 3K a month. Even at the height of the mining boom when rentals were sky-high max I got was $1400 per month.

However, in essence I agree with what you say here.

I've been. I wouldn't spend a week there, but a week in Saigon is worth it just to get awed by the incredible  women.

Well now ..

Mr.Spock says: "Logically, Captain Kirk, it is all a matter of comparison, I believe"...

"Then beam us down Scotty and lets find out for ourselves and make some logical comparisons,  like Mr. Spock suggests"

"OK Captain Kirk, but first let me coordinate the triangulations and find a suitable location to beam the 2 of you down to"

"Hmmm......The Star Gate Map of the Galaxy shows there is a seemingly suitable triangulation at a place known as Nana Please-Ya located on "Suck-Him-A-Bit"  Road and showing unusual concentrations of humanoid activity while the location shows suitable heavy breathing oxygen levels present and elevated levels of moisture and liquids content are shown while surges in increased body heat readings are indicated.

"OK....Seems  like a good place to start Scotty...Beam us down and lets check this place out and make some logical comparisons."

Cheers

I agree with most posts so far, Bangkok can be cheap and it can also be expensive.

If your already living in Bangkok then you know the cheap spots to eat well and stay but most tourists like to upgrade their standard of living whilst on vacation and some are prepared to pay a little extra while others are prepared to pay a lot extra. If you book via a travel agent then your generally limited to only a few hotels they offer as a package, which most consider a safer booking option but if you book the holiday components separately yourself then you can save a fortune but you don't have the same protection if something goes wrong.

How can you compare Bangkok to Pattaya on prices when the article clearly states Bangkok only.

Over my years in Thailand I have seen and done most things but tourists are prepared to pay more for escorted tours to the sights and places as a package add on especially if they're only here for a week.

I wonder if they know what 'qualitative' and 'quantitative' surveys are?

Answers on a postcard...

Makeitup House

Bullshitsville

I mean have they even considered the price of beer and whores?:burp: [that was a joke before the MFPs start banging on - Moral Farang Police].

By the way, being 'non-American and non-Trump', I actually do know where other countries are and SE Asia is slightly larger than Thailand and the Philippines [forget the expensive ones]. Indonesia, for example, is very cheap [Bali - or Australian Benidorm as we knew it - is not indicative of the country], I have lived there on less than $15 a day inc beer [not including <deleted>]. Added edit note - are the moral censors seriously deleting the word w h ores - get a f*****g life. Am I allowed to say ******?

So what about Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos? Are they seriously telling me: a. those countries are more expensive; or b. they are not in SE Asia?

I've seen some crap reporting in my time but these guys are masters at it.

I'd be interested to know if it is the place they would most like to RETURN to !

Nice one Richard, this is the most relevant comment on this topic so far.

Then I wondered why ask such a ridiculously phrased question? Would they would conduct a survey of 'places where tourists 'actually didn't want to visit?'. Maybe they would.

I think you missed the bit about where people want to visit. Cambodia and Laos? There not even in the game! Vietnam is sort of ok but as most have said their cities do not compare to Bangkok.
Nothing wrong with the reporting it all, you just didn't understand it.

I saw this in the Bangkok Post yesterday and the only reason Bangkok was number one in the list is because of the flight price, which is a variable depending upon where you live, therefore shouldn't really be included.

Excluding flights the Philippine destinations were cheaper, but no Cambodia or Vietnam cities in the list. Why?

As always, you can manipulate figures to read what you want them to.

You dis not even read the first sentance.

It said for people already living in SEA

But having said that I must admit as I've lived a long time in Thailand I know so many cheap, good value places to stay and eat at. In Thailand I have knowledge like a local, which obviously makes a huge difference.

Yeah I suppose that's my bias too.

Prices in malls are through the roof. I can buy adiddas cheaper at home. lt is not that cheap unless you eat from street. Indonesia cheaper and real Marlboro cigarettes. They produce fakes here. I have no clue how the company let's it take place. They taste like acid. So no I disagree.

Fair comment but wrong. That was my point exactly - their survey was skewed to promote a city. What about places 'tourists' don't know [Qualitative / quantitative]? I spent 6 months in those countries, not a week and I had much better experiences than here in BKK - beaches are great too.

It's taken a while but I've seen through the land of smiles.  Vietnam didn't get a mention because the people they asked, no doubt hadn't been there, or it's not been as promoted ie travel companies are not paying back-handers yet. The people there are much more genuine than here and there was much less 'let's rip off the farang'. Just my opinion.

Cheap is relative. A middle class couple who spend 5000 baht on dinner on the 50th floor at bayan tree roof top open restaurant gazing the whole of Bangkok will find it cheap because they spend it back home in just a nice restaurant. Where would you get that in those other countries? Cambo and loas have crappy malls if you can find one lol. Vietnam isn't exactly a shopping destination

A sky train that literally pulls up to some of the world's best malls where you can still have 30baht or 3000baht meal.. Up to you

It's the over all experience, and the cheapest for that EXPERIENCE is Bangkok! So I believe your wrong this time

SEA is a big area and for some the cost to fly to the Philippines or Bali, for example, would be cheaper than a flight to BKK, but to eat in equivalent restaurants and stay in equivalent hotels is the same regardless of where your journey starts, hence the flight cost is a factor that should not be included in a comparison such as this.
