Sanam Luang now plastic foam free

BANGKOK, 5 December 2016 (NNT) - Bangkok authorities have successfully reduced the amount of waste around Sanam Luang after mourners were told to be mindful about what they might leave behind before leaving the area.

Director of the Coordination Center for Volunteers For Dad Group Parinya Dhevanarumitkul said a joint effort between the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and a group of volunteers has been successful in keeping Sanam Luang clean to mark Thai Environment Day on December 4th and the late King’s birthday on December 5th.

The volunteers have been deployed to speak with the mourners about the need to pick up their trash particularly foam boxes before leaving. No foam containers are used at cooking stations around Sanam Laung. Water filter machines have also been installed at eight points across the area to discourage people from using plastic water bottles.

Bangkok Deputy Governor Chakkapan Phewngam revealed that the BMA had to remove as much as 110 tons of garbage each day from Sanam Luang in October, adding that amount has now decreased to only 54 tons per day after the joint effort was made. The BMA has also been able to save up to 100,000 baht from not having to remove the extra trash.
