After weathering storm, junta can enjoy smooth sailing until election
By Kasamakorn Chanwanpen

BANGKOK: -- Having passed the halfway stage on its road map to democracy, the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has weathered the storm. Now that the worst is over, it can expect an easy ride in 2017 as the election draws near.

This past year has been a rough road for the ruling NCPO. The economy has dragged while the alarming human rights situation has drawn international pressure. Meanwhile domestic politics remain filled with drama despite tough regulations. But all in all, the NCPO has ridden out the storm and is now entering the final straight of its road map.

Having made great efforts to combat abuses within the fishing sector, the military-led government reaped the benefit earlier this year when the US State Department lifted Thailand from the bottom-rung Tier 3, to Tier 2 Watchlist status in its Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report.

Xtreme happyness!

There will be no elections in 2017. They already said it might have to be delayed, again....again.....again....

Weathered the storm, what nonsense ! I'd like to think this article is just taking a sarcastic swipe at the junta and the la la land they live in !

The reality is the headline couldn't be further from the truth considering all that's going on and with what's just unfolding the worst is potentially yet to come.

"...Now that the worst is over, it can expect an easy ride in 2017 as the election draws near..."

Yep - It should be smooth sailing from now on - unless the rest of the world does something to interfere !!!

Whao, we're half way there,

Whao oh, living on a prayer!

Except they are responsible for all of these problems, not just "weathering" the self-inflicted storm.

PatOngo quoted Bon Jovi so in respect of the road map can I suggest the Hollies ?

" The road is long with many a winding turn and leads who knows where, who knows when. "

Nothing truer these days.

"Having made great efforts to combat abuses...."
Whoa boy...hold your horses!

Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect

"People will no longer expect much from the NCPO, as bread-and-butter issues and national reconciliation will give way to a singular focus on the promised election.
In the meantime, the junta can relax and continue conducting aerobics sessions in front of Government House and other publicity stunts. All it has to do now is coast along until the election next year, when hopefully it will step down peacefully."

The Thai people should have very low expectations for the future.  Those who can should look for opportunities in other countries.

Yes, but the credit for the best musical description (that probably should become the Thai national anthem) goes to Talking Heads !!!

The BS meter went right off the scale when I read this.

Come on, they've at least managed to pat themselves on the back daily.  Pretty impressive ambidexterity really.

Just think we can still look forward to the PM's New Year speech listing all their achievements for the year.

I thank the gods that we don't own a tv.

Yes the lotterytickets have a fixed price EVERYWHERE,

BKK traffic is much safer without congestions,

The police isn't corrupt anymore and does a great job now,

Thailand is safe again so the bins can come back in the malls/markets,

Pattaya beachroad is cleaned and organised,

Streetvendors are moved,

Gambling dens are gone.

Much better like this.

O.M.G.    Who exactly is the NATION working for?  Surely, this article was just handed to them to print......."or else"?

Prachatai and Khoasod  seem to be of  a less yellowish hue...even the Bangkok post has some articles that  "mr happy or else"  might not like

every now and again... the nation hardly ever goes off script.

Not forgetting the apprehension of rogue monks!

Forest encroachment is dealed with,

Many new trainlines/buses are ordered,

Farmers got some pocketmoney plus a better price for the rice,

BKK governor has been replaced,

ALL inactive posts have been fullfilled plus that department has been enlarged,

Bad boys are all out,

More tourists are coming (vely soon)

All standards for fishery and passengerflights have been raised to international level,

Passenger busdrivers all got a 2 hour course how to drive safe

Thanks Santa, it was nice dealing with you.

"it can expect an easy ride in 2017 as the election draws near".

Yes, it's all downhill from here!

this government has done a lot more for the country than previous one, so your childish comments are uncalled for.

Half way means  2019 0r 2020.

I hope the government can weather the storm from within until election.
