Russia and US to talk Aleppo rebel withdrawal as Syrian army advances

DAMASCUS: -- Syrian government forces and their allies have advanced into another rebel-held part of eastern Aleppo – according to an opposition official and the UK-based monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The latest army attack, which saw fierce clashes around the Old City, aims to cut off another area of rebel control and tighten the noose on opposition-held districts where thousands of people are trapped.

The Russian Defence Ministry claims rebels deliberately shelled a Russian military field hospital in Aleppo after it had started receiving civilians.

According to Moscow, a female military medic was killed and two others were injured.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said he is confident Moscow and Washington can reach a deal this week on the withdrawal of all rebels from eastern Aleppo.

“Now, following a US proposal, Russian and American experts in Geneva are beginning to work on the problem of eastern Aleppo. The aim of this work is complete withdrawal of all rebels from the eastern part of the city, which Russia had long supported,” Lavrov said.

Video said to have been filmed on Monday in rebel-held Idlib province and believed by Reuters to be genuine shows what appears to be cluster bombs hitting the skyline.

The areas are said to be targeted by Russian military planes backing Syrian government forces.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says more than 70 people were killed in the province on Sunday.

No wonder we have a humanitarian disaster.

Syria war: Russia, China vote against Aleppo ceasefire

Russia and China on Monday vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Syrian city of Aleppo to allow desperately needed aid into the war-ravaged zone.

The United States and Russia verbally dueled before the vote, which called for a seven-day truce. Venezuela also rejected the resolution.

Maybe the reps who vetoed this ceasefire should be made to spend a week in Aleppo.  I bet they'd change their mind rather quickly.

A ceasefire is a very bad idea at the moment. Previous ceasefires have been used to rearm and reorganize the terrorists in Aleppo. Civil wars need a clear winner and it would be better for the civilian population if the war were over asap which means carrying on and destroying every terrorist in Aleppo.

Even if Syria and Russia break Allepo, this civil war is far from over.  Terrorists will still be in Syria, as they have been for many years.

Read this article.  Very well written:

But will the defeat of IS in Mosul and Raqqa, or the recapture of Aleppo by the Syrian government, actually bring peace any closer?

The grim truth is that they may simply herald the next equally bitter stage in the conflict.

Assad's army is in shambles and Russia many not want to go any further in this war.  Time will tell.

Right, this great news.

Syrian government forces and their allies are advancing into rebel areas, and this time, Russia AND Washington are trying to tell the rebels to withdraw.  Let's hope the rebels can see sense, and withdraw.

Surely, if you are a rebel group, well, you will withdraw if you're being told to do so by Russia AND Washington ?  I mean, how are you going to say "no" when they are both telling you to do it ?

You did read my article, right?  Even if Allepo is taken, the fighting won't stop.  You also saw where Russia vetoed the UN Security Council resolution for a ceasefire?

Russia's been talking with the west for a long time to stop the bombing.  But hasn't.  They're making too much money off this war.

If it's a civil war, then not all those opposing Assad can be labeled as terrorists. Civil wars do not need "a clear winner" - which often spells a blood bath, but a resolution which addresses the issues that brought about the civil war in the first place. Granted, the former is much easier than the latter. Got to love people sitting safely thousands of miles away opining about how ongoing hostilities are in the best interests of the civilians on the ground.

The headline of the OP, which you parrot is misleading. The one referring to civilians on the grounds as rebels is Lavrov. And obviously, anyone following the news will point out that it was Russia that vetoed even the recently proposed UNSC resolution on a ceasefire.
