Chong Mek beer run on single entry visa

Featured Replies

I'm living in Ubon Ratchathani and want to go to Chong Mek to pick up some beer lao... I am on a single entry visa at the moment.  So my question is, if I go to Chong Mek just to use the duty free shop will I be stamped OUTof Thailand?  Or is the duty free shop situated BEFORE they stamp you out?

Thanks!

You have to get stamped out of the country buy a visa on arrival for Laos, enter Laos and return to do it.

Thanks for the speedy reply! Sounds like it would be cheaper to just get the taxed stuff from Makro then.. Or send a Thai person to get it and split the beer ;)

My wife does it once in a while. She gets a border pass and does a bit of shopping.

Years ago (pre 2006 coup) you could walk across and do it.

1500 baht for a Laos visa. 1200 baht for a case of Beer Lao in Macro.

Last time i was there i was told the quota for 1 person is 12 bottles beer when returning through the Thai customs ?

Officially, the duty-free quota for alcoholic beverages is one lite per person.

The Chong Mek border is not very well guarded, especially from the Lao side. You could sneak into Laos and then buy your Beer Lao and head back quickly. Not recommended of course but it could save you a lot of cash since a case is about 400 THB. Personally I would go for Beer Lao Gold. ;)

What could possibly go wrong?

1 liters of alcohol (2-3 bottles is usually no problem)

2 liters of wine

3 liters/6 bottles of beer

1 box of cigarettes (ONLY 1 box)

No Ivory, tiger skins or rhinoceros horns (unless you wear it (for example amulets))

And absolutely under no circumstances bring PLAYING CARD as that totally forbidden from import!!!

That's what the customs officer told me last time returning from Laos as he forced me to throw away 2 decks of cards but totally ignored that I had 5 bottles of Laos whiskey in my bag!

A lot I suppose haha. But I crossed this border many times and security is a joke because of all the construction going on on the Lao side. I suggest to make use of it and strike a deal with a Lao person.
