Yes, but when pedants want a national ID that includes a home address, like the OP's bank jobsworth is insisting, the passport doesn't quite hack it. I had a go-around with my offshore bank trying to fulfil their KYC rules a few years back. They wanted a government-issued photo ID or a utility bill in my name that showed my Thai address... in English. Luckily, the Thai DL renewal had part of my address here in tiny English font on the obverse, but it still took a bit of too-and-fro before they accepted it. Thai DL's didn't always have the address on the back. -

Traffic Manila Introduces Smart Traffic Lights to Ease City Congestion

These installations, contributed by North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) Corporation, mark a significant upgrade from traditional timed signals. Positioned strategically on C3 Road in Caloocan, España Boulevard at the Antipolo Street junction, and Magsaysay Boulevard in Manila, these lights aim to streamline vehicular flow at intersections that see around 143,000 vehicles daily. “These sensor-based traffic signals are designed to manage vehicle flow and pedestrian crossings effectively,” stated MMDA Chairman Don Artes. Unlike conventional systems, these new signals adapt in real-time to traffic conditions through the use of sensors, adjusting their timings for improved efficiency and safety. The technology represents a response to ongoing traffic challenges, where drivers have been known to speed through red lights amid congestion. By reading vehicle volume, the signals adjust accordingly, with the green light flashing five times before switching to yellow and then red, offering a progressive transition to help drivers comply. Artes previously highlighted the need for such sensor-based systems, as they predict and respond to dynamic traffic patterns, reducing the incentive for risky driving during peak periods. Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation’s Chief Regulatory Officer, Arrey Perez, commented on the collaborative effort, saying these intelligent signal lights are part of a broader initiative to enhance traffic management, road safety, and sustainability. “This venture represents a commitment to lessening congestion and improving the travelling experience, whether on expressways or local roads,” Perez remarked. “Our collaboration aims to create safer environments for both motorists and the wider community.” The shift to adaptive signalling is expected to ease traffic pressure across Manila's bustling streets, offering a glimpse into the future of urban mobility. With more than 12 million residents frequently facing gridlock, these technological advancements are part of a strategic plan to modernise the city’s infrastructure. The adoption of these sophisticated systems comes at a time when urban centres globally are seeking innovative solutions to traffic woes, embracing technology to enhance efficiency and safety. Should the initial installations prove effective, they may pave the way for broader application across the region. As these sensors revolutionise Manila’s traffic management, the MMDA hopes to create a seamless experience for both drivers and pedestrians, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and liveable city.
