Apple TV 4 software update problems - 3BB

Thought I'd post this just in case anyone else is pulling their hair out with this.

About a week ago Apple released the TVOS 10.1 update for the Apple TV.  I was on the previous OS 10.0.01 and whatever I tried kept returning "Your Apple TV is up to date".  I'd tried everything: ethernet, wifi, changing DNS, restore, restore and update and EVERY time it returned 10.0.01 "Your Apple TV is up to date".  So today I planned to take it to the Apple re-seller here to get them to take a look and possibly change the unit under warranty.

Then I thought I'd try one more thing, just in case it WAS a network problem.  I'm on 3BB FTTx and, aside from some IP address range banning on a few very specific sites I've had no connection issues elsewhere.   I thought it was a real long shot but it really was the ONLY possible thing I could think of.  So I used my iPhone, switched to mobile data and switched on 'Personal Hotspot'.  I then connected the Apple TV by wi-fi to the PHS and bingo!!! "There is an update available".  Downloaded it and now all is fine running 10.1.

It's a concern though that there is a problem somewhere and I'm not sure where / what that is?  Is might be something that's an Apple problem or a problem with my ISP.  I'm guessing it's an ISP problem, not letting the ATV communicate how it needs with the Apple servers.  I'm hoping it's not some kind of IP address blocking by Apple.  I'm also not sure if it's just my connection or if it will affect everyone using this (or indeed another) ISP.  I plan to do an Apple feedback later and hope they get back to me on it so whatever info is needed can be communicated to the ISP here or so that Apple can take what steps they can / need to their end.

First time I've ever encountered this, very strange.

I’m on 3BB 200/50 MBit fiber line and have the same problem.

Software updates on my iPhone and Apple TV generally fail and I cannot stream anything from Beats One.

But other than that, there are no problems with the line, yet, if I use another connection (TOT or mobile hotspot), the above problems go away.

Been trying to google the issue, but this was the only post I found.

Can you tell me what channels and apps you can get on Apple TV in Thailand? Is it possible to use it with a VPN in order to access UK or other European networks?

I have a feeling it's either a 3BB issue that their people might be able to solve or some kind of IP address problem at the Apple end with the ranges 3BB are using. I contemplated contacting both companies over it, but was leaving 3BB so ended up not bothering. Couldn't fathom what else it could have been.

Here on AIS in Bangkok I've had no problems, though I've since switched from using ATVs. Would be interesting to see if anyone else using 3BB in other districts is having problems with Apple firmware updates, not sure if it's a regional problem only or affecting all devices on 3BB, or maybe it's only their fibre connection. From memory it was only affecting my ATVs, not phone updates over wi-fi. Very strange.

Probably a 3BB network cache issue, similar to True's transparent proxy, or one of 3BB's peers is caching data from major sites like Apple to save the overseas bandwidth..
