The introduction of Compton back scatter x-ray radiation detectors at all international airports in Thailand together with roaming ZBV wagons checking both moving and stationary vehicles on the 4 main highways, has significantly complicated the lives of drug smugglers in Thailand. Forget whatever you know about normal 'pass through' x-rays used in hospitals - this technology is completely different, and lead to the inventor being awarded a nobel prize.

 

Only a complete idiot would attempt to enter Thailand nowadays smuggling cocaine outside their body in their clothes or hidden in a suitcase - with a working 'back-scatter' system, all such attempts would get picked up immediately.

This quite gifted drugs mule swallowed the 2Kg cocaine subdivided into around 100 or more double bagged condoms covered in wax to prevent stomach acid from rotting the rubber through(that wouldn't be good...) an example of a couple of recovered eggs in in the left most bag on the police evidence table - thus practically his entire intestinal track + stomach was filled with cocaine eggs

Catch the mules...

 

It is obviously quite difficult catching drugs mules with a gut full of coke eggs - thus intel (as in this instance) or cabin staff feedback (list of passengers who refused food and drink on the plane) are the commonly used methods to select passengers for individual checks.  This method is also very dangerous for he drugs mule - a single ruptured cocaine egg contains enough drugs to kill a man several times over(accepted human male lethality if an '8-ball' of just 3.5gram) . Even Charlie Sheen couldn't survive a coke egg burst, although over 24 hours with a couple of porn stars he has notorious proven tolerance, thus I'm sure he'd be OK. I have some DEA FOUO classified post mortem docs somewhere showing the aftermath caused by coke eggs bursting that can not be posted here. Certain foods are utter no-nos for the mules such as coca cola (it rots the eggs wax and rubber covering very quickly) leading to certain death through coke OD within a few hours when the eggs burst. Suspect profiling based on habits exhibitted during the previous few hours is thus the way to go.

Without the confession the police legally (according to Western standards of evidence of course) had no case other than any illegal substance found within the body. Police find cocaine in an unsecured changing room in a used clothes bin - anyone could have theoretically stashed cocaine there (like a previous mule), even the police themselves. In the alternative the police allowed the suspect privacy to strip down in a room - really? Very sloppy police work.
