PM Slams Corrupt Journalists

Prime Minister Hun Sen had harsh words for corrupt journalists, telling a meeting of his party that they should be arrested if they are caught extorting money from people. Information Minister and government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said Mr. Hun Sen told the 40th Congress of the ruling CPP’s Central Committee yesterday that “if any journalist does something wrong, authorities have to handcuff them immediately and inform the Interior Minister.”
 

Ouk Kimseng, a spokesman and undersecretary of state at the ministry, said the statement was a reminder to authorities to take action against journalists who act contrary to their profession. “Local competence has always been requested by the Information Ministry,” he said. “The ministry responded that those who do illegal things are against their profession, so please use the law and apply it to them, especially local journalists in rural areas where it is illegal logging or timber transportation that some journalists use to extort money.
 

“This is not the work of journalists.” Huy Vannak, the president of the Union of Journalists’ Federation of Cambodia, said he supported the use of law enforcement against journalists who fake their identity and try to extort money from people while they work.
