I am in Thailand on an Education Visa which expires in mid-January. I have been told that I need to go to Immigration to cancel the visa before I leave the country. This seems odd to me as the visa is obviously expiring. Does anyone know if this is true? What happens if I just leave the country without canceling the Ed Visa? 

At one time the Nong Khai border crossing wanted the extension (not a visa) canceled but stopped doing it some time ago. A valid visa could not be canceled.

No problem now to leave without canceling it.
